That seems... overly complex for the image that this game portrays.

Yep, considering that the majority of action involves mindless shooting (with a tiny bit of pathfinding and problem solving) you'd think they'd come up with a cleaner way of allowing the poor meatsack to jump a distance (or make it plain that you can only do so while lightly armed and not dual-wielding).

Personally I'd rather have had a new Rage than a new Wolfenstein but it's been a fun romp.

Proper 'next-gen' Rage would be excellent!

Clearing the backlog, I've gone back to: LA Noire. Only three cases from the end, but thoroughly enjoyed it last night. Can't imagine why I stopped.

I'd love a sequel to Rage but I think the IP is dead in the water now. Shame as it was a great game with excellent graphics, gameplay and level design. It actually got decent reviews across the board but I don't think it ever quite lived up to the expectations of being the next big thing from id.

Just finished Bastion there now. Very enjoyable game, really liked playing around with different combinations of weapons and skills. The art style was gorgeous too. I quite liked the Narrator as well, but didn't find his presence or narration as mind-blowing as some of the reviewers did back when it was released.

Popped along to Ninty's post E3 showcase last week and had a go at a few of their forthcoming games.

Kirby- sort of a mix between Rainbow Islands and one of those Marble Madness style games. Kirby rolls along and you have to draw rainbows with the stylus on the screen to get him over obstacles. It worked pretty well but the major downside I found was I ended up playing it exclusively on the gamepad so I could see what I was doing better. It would perhaps work better on the 3DS rather than the Wii U.

Splatoon-frantic and brilliant fun with 8 players. The arenas are small enough that you don't lose the opposition and the game is very quick. Turning into a squid to top up your ink is a novelty but overall from what I saw, I can't think that it will have a great deal of longevity.

Yoshi's Woolly World- what a wonderful game. I enjoyed the recent Yoshi's New Island on 3DS but I prefer home console platform gaming personally. This has everything and looks incredibly. Basically Yoshi and the environment are made of wool and in HD you can see the fluff on every thread. Yoshi can unravel parts of the scenery, cover metal frames with wool to make platforms, and even unravels his legs a bit when he does his flutter jump thingy. Strikes me the wool motive is integral to the game, rather than a gimmick. Can't wait for this one to be released but it's not out until next year apparently.

Other stuff I played- Sonic Boom? Terrible. Rubbish graphics, poor, imprecise handling and sloooow (it's focussed on exploration, so why is it a Sonic game?), Smash Bros- fast and colourful but I've never played one before and it confused the hell out of me. The 3DS version was as impressive as the Wii U game though...

Popped along to Sony's autumn/winter showcase yesterday to have a go at some of the big releases out soon.

Drive Club- they had three tracks and three cars available to play with, an Aston Martin, a Merc and a Ferrari. The handling on the Ferrari was massively different to the other two; turning circle of a bus and felt very heavy, making it by far the hardest one to get the hang of but after about two hours of play I managed a 3:14 on the circuit and from listening, the best anyone had managed was a 3:09, so I was fairly happy given that the last time I properly got into a racer was probably the Japanese import of Gran Turismo. Graphically it's very pretty, with some great lighting effects and leaves and stuff blowing over the tracks. I didn't discern much pop in and there was only a couple of instances of slow down. I played mostly on the bumper cam because that's my fave but the cockpit view worked pretty well and the animations for gear change were great, varying depending on what angle the wheel was at. I don't know if many of you have driven flappy paddle gear boxed cars but when I did, I was initially surprised that the flappy paddles are fixed and don't turn with the wheel. Well, if you're turning in drive club, the driver flicks out his last two fingers to flip the paddle, which I thought was nice. The handling is definitely on the arcadey side, with lots of in game point scoring for drafting, drifting and overtaking. It was definitely a lot more fun than I expected it to be, even if it still looked like there was a fair bit to do (at one point 3 cars in front of me all went wireframed for no discernible reason).

Destiny-looked lovely but completely souless, probably given the limited level we had to play. Very smooth play but mostly lacking context, unlike...

The Order 1886- which looks great and plays pretty well too. I went through the demo twice, admiring the moustaches in this steampunk third person shooter. There are plenty of nice graphical touches and it's definitely a game I'd like to play more of.

Far Cry 4 looks nice, got machine gunned a lot though.

BroForce- every single second I was playing this indie game I had an enormously stupid grin on my face. It's a retro style scrolling shooter that's as mad as a brush. I particularly liked the way when you rescue prisoners you get an extra character. They're all modelled on 80's action heroes although you do get Blade at one point. I loved this so much, I bought it on Steam on the way home.

Other than that, played some GT6, which made me realise I can't go back to last gen for racing games as it looked terrible, some Lego Batman 3, which was fun but predictable and a bit of the new singstar until too many people complained.

What is this front page you make mention of?

I don't keep my finger on the pulse enough to know more than Drive Club should have been a launch title and all the social aspects can be demoed before release :D

Nice Write-up! BroForce sounds like "Expendables - the Game" which is no bad thing.

Quite looking forward to The Order and DriveClub though I seriously think a lot of people are going to pick at DriveClub until they proclaim it "broken" which will be a bit of a shame. If it ends up going head to head with Project Cars it's going to be very interesting.

Was hoping it'd end up being more Project Gotham than Forza Horizon but by the sound of it, it's gone for a slightly more simmy approach than arcade.

Destiny is something I don't think a quick go on will really show it off.

I played probably over a dozen hours in the alpha and was really sad when it was over even with the limited content it contained.

Can easily see it being the biggest game of the year.

Biggest multiplayer maybe, well till whatever soulless flavour of COD is dished up later on. Not sure Battlefield is even in it this year for me.

Will probably avoid Destiny, I'd never be able to get into it in any form if there's no single player campaign

Finally, finally finished Half Life 2 over the weekend. Mostly enjoyed it from start to finish, and considering how old it is, in a genre that does seem to be making positive progress, it's a hack of an impressive game!

OK, so some elements seem pretty antiquated - mainly vehicle handing and object manipulation - but by an large it's brilliant.

The pacing is spot on; no sooner have you had enough of the close combat of Ravenholm than you're bouncing across the beach in your buggy. The set-pieces too, and great. There's something very satisfying about taking down a stalker :)

I think I'll move onto Bioshock Infinite next.

On Vita, I'm taking a break from Borderlands 2, as I've been playing it constantly for the past 6 weeks, and gone for a real contrast in the guise of Child of Light. I've only done an hour of it so far, but am loving the change of pace. It's a stunning game, sith solid RPG mechanics (so far), although I do wonder if the slow pace will count against it in the end...

Just started Unchartered on the PS3. Quite a lot of tearing, and the blur when you turn quickly is irritating but the game itself is good fun.

First one?

I really enjoyed that one, but #2 is a significant step up and definitely worth a look at once you've finished the first.

Currently watching Twin Peaks. :-)

Too little time what with kids.

Uncharted 2 is the best in the series I reckon. The first one is good but the combat gets a bit tiresome and there's a little too much of it, whereas the second game has a nice balance between combat-heavy sections and areas where you're free to explore without getting bogged down in gunfights all the time. The third one, meanwhile, tips back towards having too much combat - and towards the end it gets really quite frustratingly hard. I never finished it in the end, which is a shame considering how much I enjoyed the first two.

Yup, the first one, picked it up last year for about a fiver so thought I'd give it a go now I've finished Tomb Raider on PC.

Enjoying it, even if the PS3 looks like it's struggling with the visuals.

Currently hammering the crap out of Kingdom Rush as recommended by user Blerk. Although he hadn't played it, just sat in his humble account.

Nexus 7 is lovely to play, heartily recommend.

Not gone back to Ass Creed 4 in ages, despite loving it. Still suffered from the same old Ass problem of being too repetitive really.

And Minecraft... always Minecraft. :-/

You must try EPs 1 & 2 then.

1 is a bit claustrophobic and reliant upon jump-scares, and I don't remember anything else about it. It's not special. However, 2 is rather better and there's a set-piece near the end which I think you'd enjoy immensely.

I played that, loved it. When I finished it I started again immediately on the hardest mode it has (1999 mode?) and went for the achievements to not use the vending machine that gives you supplies.

Made the game even better!
