Bit of a random question here - having just spent the last couple of years getting to grips with PHP which I found was the first 'programming' language that clicked with me, do you reckon this has given me enough of a grounding to have a go at summat like C#, or are they completely different entities?

Sorry Hairy, I've not done any PHP so I have no idea.

I don't think it's an ideal language to start with, put it that way, lots of new concepts and your code could get very messy if you didn't know the principles behind some of what it does, which is something that learning C++ first might help with.

On the other hand, the benefits of C# are that it hides all the combobulators and thingummies so you don't have to deal with it - everything's pretty easy to use.

If you know about Object Oriented Programming you'll be fine. If you dont, it's not really that complicated :)

PHP has fairly C-like syntax, so at a basic level they're reasonably similar. Like Teeth says, though, C# is all object-oriented, so having some understanding of how that works is a bonus. Still, I really don't think it's hard to get enough of a grasp that you can't get stuff up and running quickly enough, especially if you've done some programming. There must be a million decent tutorials on basic OOP out there.

Buying/lending/robbing a book is always the best bet. I've been skimming through Linky to help myself get up to speed with C# and it's certainly a good introduction.

If you just want to make games and use C#, then you're probably best just downloading XNA and playing with the tutorials.

On the other hand, if you want to keep to scripted languages, you might be best having a look at python. It's got a massive number of docs, libraries and support for stuff like SDL (via pyGame) and OpenGL.

Single player wise, I'm only on the second part of the Carentan(correct name?) mission, it's the multiplayer that I'm hooked on as if it were crack! With the AI on the harder settings it's a really excellent co-operative game, and team vs are stonkingly good fun as well, got to love the horrific sound those Nurbewerfer make when they launch!

Single player is many shades of excellent, but multi certainly has its charms when you're in seperate TS channels plotting and planning *smiley*

Hmmm - so can you play as the germans in multiplayer?

Always thought that this was one of COH's weak points, not having separate campaigns for each side, a la "Soldiers: Heroes of WWII"

That's right, you form two teams as the Axis vs Allies. The Axis can build 88s with one of the doctrines, that's my favourite side to play as, nothing like storming over your fortifications with a wave of Panzer IVs backed up by a Nurberwurfer(sp) bombardment.

Should be dirt cheap by now pretty much anywhere.

It's more "direct" than COH, in that you can control tanks and units in it almost like you do in a FPS. But it's an RTS, and quite a strategic one too. Looks gorgeous.

DL the demo and give it a go and if you like that, see if you can find the full versh anywhere.

I'm very intrigued by CoH but in all honesty it's about 9 months (if not longer) since I last played a game on the PC.

I'm bang into Zelda atm. Lovely stuff. Can't wait to view the game in 480p tbh. Colours are a little washed out atm.

It's definitely one of the better PC titles of last year. Whether you like it or not depends largely on whether or not you can stand a bit more WWII RTS fun.

I love it to bits, since the demise of the 360 I've put in a lot of hours with it.

Started playing Hotel Dusk on the DS last night.

It's very slow so far and hasn't grabbed me at all yet - though I am sure it will as one or two mysteries are starting to unravel.

The graphics are fantastic though, all the character art and animation is done in that 'Aha - Take On Me' Music video style and it looks really lovely on the DS.

It's a shame that the 3d engine for wandering around the hotel doesn't look quite so brilliant but so far so good.

Mini review?

I sorta fancy that meself but I'm too lazy to import it.

At the moment, still playing Company of Heroes...

Not played any more Zelda (the last dungeon is just so annoyingly sparse that there's no real clue as to what the feck you're supposed to do)

Mammoth session tomorrow to finish off Zelda though once and for all before the 360 comes back.

I would have snatched Hotel Dusk up by now, if I didn't still have Age of Empires DS to unwrap. Final Fantasy 3 has been glued to my DS since Christmas morning. I think I'm probably taking my time with it more than most people - I've only just upgraded my jobs to Knight, Geomancer, Scholar and (lvl34) Monk. I don't even notice the grind, any more. It's a very sweet game.

I will write a review when there's something to write about. In the 3 hours I played last night all I know is that I'm an ex cop staying in a motel owned by a miserable bastard. There's a little girl playing in the hotel corridors and the bell boy is someone I arrested 3 years ago.

I shit you not, it took me 3 hours to get through all that!

But while the pace is initially extremely sedate so far I feel sure it's going to ramp up at any moment so I'm prepared to be patient.

After playing it in some boring classes, I've finally got back into Rocket Slime. It has won me over again with its delightful puns, and I'm glad to see that there is some story (thought it would just be about going to one area after another collecting slimes). The areas become more complex, too, which helps things.

Also, those three ninja slimes are super cool!
