Enjoyed Metro quite a bit. You can play it quite stealthily if you want to and the world is pretty interesting. I recommend playing it on easy since there are one or two places where you just have to fight of waves of identical enemies.

Brothers is pretty short (around 2h) and the controls are a bit clunky, but it makes for a great evening worth of entertainment.

Can't really speak for the other two. Gave up on Vanquish after a few minutes since it really wasn't my kind of game. Enjoyed DmC for the silly dialogue, but can't really judge the gameplay. I just played it like a button masher, which is probably not the "right" way to play it.

Of those, I've only played Brothers, but it was excellent. And it's short, too.

I'd play Sonic & All Stars Racing pal. I picked it up cheap on Steam and really enjoyed it. One of the few kart racing games that actually gets the balance right between rewarding good driving and allowing you to make up lost positions using power-ups. Definitely no 'blue shell' style moments of frustration here!

Half Life 2, surely? It's pretty old now, admittedly, and I suspect some of the physics puzzles will look a bit quaint, but I'd be willing to bet that the level design and pacing are still spot on.

@ Neko - we'll as I've never played it, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I know it'll look a bit old now, but I was thinking of playing through it on the easiest setting, just to blast through the whole thing...

So, Sonic and Half Life 2 it is :D

You've reminded me indeed to go back to Metro. I played the first one to death - several times - but something about the sequel ultimately left me cold. Lost a lot of atmosphere in favour of CoD-ification, I think.

Have you played Half Life? Can you remember it? If not, don't bother with HL2!

I think it's a bit like Halo in that it becomes a lot more meaningful and involving if you buy into the story, rather than treating it as a well-regarded FPS.

It's not a great shooter. It will seem dated. There will be sections of the game you find very prolonged and boring. However, if you're a fan of the story begun in HL1 and buy into the world into which you're introduced, you'll love it. The nature of your enemy encounters will change throughout the game, as your impact in its world becomes known.

I liked it as a shooter anyway, on harder difficulty. I enjoyed having to think through each setpiece, changing my preparations each time I got beaten.

Maybe try HL1 (or Black Mesa - it's free, but only part done) to begin with? It'll set the tone enough for you to decide whether HL2 is something you really want to enjoy.

HL2 is just so damn good. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it if I played it for the first time now though.

I've just bought a new MacBook. I'm actually pretty tempted to go ahead and play through it on there.

Yeah, as I said before, although it might look dated, the level and enemy design is still top-notch. Also I'd elaborate on Bremenacht's comment to say that it's not so much the story that's great in HL2 but the world-builidng - there's so many great incidental details, and so much atmosphere, and it draws you in right from the off (the railway station is a great bit of scene-setting).

Yeah, sorry, that's more like what I meant.

Not the story as it plays out in the game so much, but the story that plays (or played) out off-camera. Why is this house derelict? Who put up these barriers? Why is the sea so far out? Where is everyone? i.e world-building!

Now that I'm done with the last Vita recommendation of Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed, what should I play next:
- Dragon's Crown
- Lone Survivor
- Dokuro
- Dead Nation

?

Edge online seems to be having a 'restrospectives' day as they've posted loads of archive articles about classic games. New to me was this Half Life 2 one, which as we were chatting about it recently I thought I'd post the link for - well worth a read to remember all the reasons why it *is* worth playing. ;)

@F_P - Sorry for skipping over your post, I haven't played any of them!

I decided to have a go at Lone Survivor - apparently it's meant to be quite short. I've only done about half anb hour so far, but it's very strange and actually quite spooky!

Lone Survivor looks great, think I picked it up as part of a Humble Bundle and am looking forward to trying it, though it looks like the sort of game that'd work nicely on a tablet too.

I've recently created a spreadsheet for all of my games, mostly so I can keep track of what I have and don't buy duplicates... but damn my backlog is depressing!

Should keep me busy for a while though. At the rate I play games that's probably 10+ years worth of gaming!

So, once I'm done with HL2, I want to go for something which is a non-FPS (before I dive into Bioshock Infinite), so which one should I go for:

- Dishonoured (I've heard it's more stealth than shooter?)
- Infamous
- Ni No Kuni
- Sly 3

Ni No Kuni! It's fantastic, although in the manner of all JRPGs it is a bit slow to get going. Well worth persisting with though, it's gorgeous to look at and packed full of stuff to do.

Try the recently released Everybody's Gone to the Rapture - it has beautifully done up landscapes, scary signals of a disaster and memories of times long gone past. The soundtrack is like the icing on the cake. Or else, sports game lovers could try this NFL-based game called GameDay Heroes for some good old NFL fun,e specially now since the season is on.
