Congrats to you and Jasmin (Yasmin?)! I wondered where you had been - I thought perhaps you'd been crushed by a landslide of boardgames.

I was going to say Sil's your man as he has both; we were just chatting about them the other day, as I said I was close to getting an Xbox One (and I've just ordered.....a bundle with two controllers and the Halo collection for £290, which is great value in Hungary).

I'm one of the many who went from (primary use of) PS2 to 360 then back to PS4. No regrets with the PS4 - I find the interface a little fiddly at times, but otherwise I'm very impressed - I bought a Sony KDL42W705B 42-inch for it, and the wireless stereo 7.1 headset (the chief cause of me shitting my pants while playing Alien Isolation).

Other attractions: Sil has got me back on to Destiny on PS4, it's very nice to be playing it again. Next up we're going to give Dying Light Co-op a bash (I've finished it once and loved it - if you were a Dead Island fan, you'll enjoy it).

Oh, and The Witcher 3 - this doesn't help you decide between consoles - but it's fantastic, and is giving me the sort of satisfaction that Dragon Age Inquisition spectacularly failed to. Looks gorgeous too, vertical slice controversy or not.

Xbox One here.

Grabbed one based purely on friends I play with going for xbox over PS4.

Can't say I have the same issue with updates as Sil. Mine happily download as and when and are generally installed when I come to play a game. Initial disc loads are tiresome, but frankly you only need to do that once.

What I don't like is the fact you have to use the 'Instant On' stand by mode for it to download updates automatically and that isn't much use when you first get a game. You should be able to play a game whilst an update for it is downloading and the machine should download updates automatically without being put on stand by. The way the PS4 handles installing and updating games is a far more user friendly experience as it never gets in the way of actually playing a game unlike the Xbox One. Plus you can have the PS4 download updates in stand by mode if you want but for me I only want consoles using up electric and bandwidth when I'm actually playing on them so I never leave them in stand by mode. Obviously this isn't the best way of using the Xbox One ;-)

This has been more of an issue for me when I just got the Xbox One because I had 5 boxed games plus the MCC download to play so was swamped with installs and updates. I still think it is a stupid system where you have to wait for an update to download before you can a play because you can't get straight into a brand new game like you can with the PS4. Just my experience though and if I had fibre broadband it probably wouldn't be an issue at all!

When you used to wait 10 minutes with everything crossed in the hope that your ZX Spectrum game cassette would load up without the dreaded 'R tape loading error' you learn to never moan about loading times. Waiting for day 1 patches is another matter entirely ;-)

Thanks for the replies, all (and thanks for the congratulations - I can already see why sleep deprivation was so popular at Abu Ghraib).

I think - and I'm still a little surprised by it, that I'm heading for PS4 (first). I really like the look of Bloodborne, and I can see me getting very excited over No Man's Sky, later in the year.

Plus that Ico sequel that I bought a PS3 for... ahem.

Exclusives-wise, there's certainly a couple of things I'd like on the XBone... Dead Rising 3 is the only thing, off the top of my head, and maybe that's telling.

I noted that Game have a bundle of the PS4 with Witcher 3 and Bloodborne for £319. Anyone know of any other decent offers (because, you know, I kind of resent giving money to Game on general principal, these days)?

Birthday coming up; I may have to ask for cash instead of socks, this year...

Why yes:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/playstation-4-console-witcher-3-wild-hunt-tlou-remastered-project-cars-3-months-2217005

Add these items AND SPECIFY THE SELLER AS AMAZON IN ALL CASES:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BE4HOIM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KL32ANQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BT9DU0I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LWRSJB2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

And then go through to checkout to apply discounts...

That gets you:
Playstation 4
3 months PSN
The Last of Us Remastered
Witcher 3
Project Cars

all for a disgusting £263.97

But hurry, I don't know how long Amazon will put up with this code-stacking (though some say this is intentional and a slim PS4 is on the way).

I missed this offer by an hour. Gah!

Thanks for looking out for me, NY. That offer even allowed me to swap TLOU for The Order. Which I also would have done. (Played TLOU already.)

Got a PS4 with The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne over a week ago. I'm actually quite impressed with the console - fast, quiet, and everything seems a lot less fiddlier than on the PS3. The simple interface - putting games first and foremost - is a sharp contrast to the bloated mess that the 360 dash became towards the end of its lifespan. Controller's really nice, too - the headphone jack is such a simple but useful addition.

I've put a fair few hours into The Witcher 3 this past week. A few bugbears aside, I have to admit it's been pretty great so far. The RDR + Skyrim comparisons are apt. That, Bloodborne and the huge amount of PS+ games I've already downloaded should keep me going for ages.

So yeah, really happy with the purchase. Console itself looks rather nice in white, too.

It just so happens that I've taken advantage of the offer and am now in the PS4 camp.

What have I done with it so far?

Watched Netflix :D

And, simultaneously, every fracking PS4 deal has vanished. There's nothing in stock. :(

Ho! Just spotted that Amazon have sprung up another deal: console, Witcher 3 and The Order for £319. Ends Friday.

That'll do, pig.

Good deal. The Witcher 3 is one of the best games I've played in a long time. I think you'll love it. Couldn't be arsed with The Order but will give it a bash when it's virtually free...

Love my PS4. Stuck a 2TB HDD in it and has consciously tried to get digital download most of the time. Not overly fussed about a slim as the console will stand upright- unlike the Xbone. Waiting for the redesigned Xbone before considering one of them :)

It's like MS trying to trap your dick in a revolving door. BC at launch would have surely swelled their sales, as most people would welcome the opportunity to take their huge games collection forward to a new machine as a starting place. But this late in? With a list like that?

Yep, dick in a door.

If I was into Xbox-type games, the BC on the X1 would sway me towards buying one for sure.

(Then again if I was into Xbox-type games I would've got a 360 by now).

I do see the value in BC: I only got my phat 60GB PS3 when I did because Sony were phasing BC out of the new models. (Of course it turned out there weren't many PS2 games I still wanted to play, and the ones I did try were buggy and unplayable on PS3).

Man, it's hard being a console gamer. Every new generation casting a blind eye to your existing game collection. If my favourite kinds of game weren't specifically console games, I'm sure I'd have moved to PC by now.

See, I never used to think BC was 'all that' back in the day when having 2 or 3 consoles sitting under the telly, and shelves full of multiple generations of games didn't sound too bad. Now though, with the space in our house being eaten up by three people, it's a different story. BC would have definitely had me considering an Xbox One purely to have one less box under the telly, but a new box that could potentially play new and exciting things as well as some of the old stuff.

I admire MS's approach more than Sony's. Any shit where you have to pay to play stuff you already own, via the magic of some cloud service, is not for me. If Sony somehow strongarmed their Play service so that you could stick an original PS3 game in your PS4 drive and have the online version validate via that, I'd be happy with that.

but, as I said previously, with the rumoured architectures (low clock speed 8 core AMD x86-64), backwards compatibility seems unlikely in both cases.

just reading about how belatedly wrong I was. Interesting reading.

They're still a load of guff though.
