Let the bitching begin! MS says Xbox 720 already pisses all over PS4. C & VG says PS4 has 33% more raw power than the Xbox 720.

Wii U? Wii WHO more like, amirite?

I'll pick the one with the better games a year after launch.

Or a new computer, if someone sells a small, quiet computer that is capable of running Civ, SimCity and other games like that.

This thread proves 2 things.

1) We're all burnt out on this sort of "war". We'll see what happens when they get here.

2) AATG hasn't woken up from the xmas hangover.

Meh, only got a PS3 two years ago, certainly won't be jumping on to the next-gen any time soon. But then I've never been an early adopter.

The whole bragging match over specifications gets on my wick to a certain extent. It's the ease of development and the dedication of resources by developers/publishers that will decide which machine gets the best games (and then, no doubt, my money).

Backwards compatibility will be a big sticking point though - people will be annoyed if their accounts don't get transferred across and if their library of downloaded games aren't compatible with their new machines. That'll be a big time-sink for both Sony and MS to get that sorted, unless they include legacy hardware in each new console which drives up costs (ala Sony with the original PS3).

if the rumours are true then they're too much like PCs to maintain any kind of 'natural' optimisation performance advantage anyway, optimising for amd just makes it run even better on intel. I don't imagine that whatever sequels of sequels that they come up with will make me want to spend money on console hardware instead of more PC games (or a nice new lens or a kindle paperwhite or any number of other things).

I'll buy the MS device. It's not like I've not owned a playstation since the first one had it's price cut from 399 but the Xbox ecosystem just seems better to me.

I'd go for the PS4 purely for the Uncharted series of games. Although I'd probably be better off skipping the next generation of console releases and actually finishing the rather large backlog of bargain bin purchases I have sat on my shelf ;-)

Potentially the only thing that would get me to 'double dip' again next gen would be just that, a serious set of Sony exclusives to compliment the (inevitably better) cross platform stuff on the NextBox (assuming that, of course, Sony manage to naff SOMETHING up for developers that cripples cross-platform development)

New Motorstorm would do it, new Uncharted would definitely do it, new LittleBigPlanet too and of course if there's even the faintest whiff of The Last Guardian skipping a generation and ending up on PS4 that would clinch it.

With the old belt tightening a fair bit for games purchasing, both would need to have game prices similar to titles for this gen. No fricking way could I support a 60 quid minimum per game habit as has been touted around by publishers talking up the next gen.

I have been disappointed with every PlayStation console purchase since the PS2, so Microsoft would have to do something pretty fucking silly to put me off buying their new machine.

/Couldn't give a shit about the specs.

That, in spades. I've seen christ knows how much PC-style spec willy measuring, it's getting ridiculous. I'm all for dreaming about and discussing the new uber machines but some people really need to get laid a lot more :) The thing will be what it is when it's sat under your telly and you're playing a game on it.

I think the most important thing is what else they will bring to the table. It sounds like MS are at least having a go at making it an all-encompassing media portal, it remains to be seen what Sony will offer; nobody is talking about new media formats, which was a huge driver for the PS2 and PS3. 4K could be a point of growth for higher capacity blu-ray discs. Unfortunately on both counts there are boxes like the WDTV and Apple TV selling for a lot less money that solve the problem already, and 4K TVs are not going to be within reach of ordinary folk for a few years yet.

However, I'm waiting for the big collective "so what" from the mass market that is still obsessed with tablets. High prices, noisy or unreliable systems at launch could be disastrous. Getting it right on day one has never been as important as it is now.

Architecturally there is no common ground between the rumoured specs and the current systems, so backwards compatibility may come down to "keep your old system". As much as this has been a long generation, I still think they have an extraordinarily hard sell on their hands.

disclaimer: I have almost no intention of considering either system as I rarely get tellytime to myself, PC is my refuge and may colour my opinions :).

I think the PS3 is my last Sony machine. It just hasn't had the play that the 360 has, for so many reasons.

I'm not even bothered about BluRay any more... because the vocal track has been abysmal on 90% of the discs I own. I've tried fudging all kinds of settings, but speech gets lost amid all the other racket in the movies.

Mind you, no way am I buying a new MS console until forums suggest there aren't three hardware beta versions released first. I've bought three fucking 360s in my time. My brother is on his fifth.

And by the look of it (from pocket lint at least), no sodding backwards compatibility on the new xbox :(

the pocket-lint thing was an anonymous bullshitter who sent the same news to every site, only P-L were dumb enough to report on it.

but, as I said previously, with the rumoured architectures (low clock speed 8 core AMD x86-64), backwards compatibility seems unlikely in both cases.

Yep agree, in spades. Fucking atrocious BR quality on both players I own.

I think the launch pricepoint is going to be interesting to watch. The economies of most rich countries just aren't what they were when the PS3/360 launched and so I just don't see as how Sony/MS could justify similar prices.

Man, if only Nintendo had done away with Wiimotes for the Wii U, I'd almost ALMOST be tempted to go purely Nintendo this time round as I begin to introduce my almost 3 year old into games.

As someone who's bought the last 4 pieces of Sony hardware on launch day (including the Vita), there's no way I'll be getting a next-gen console in 2013 or (probably) 2014.

I have a pretty substantial backlog on my PS3 and as much I'll get tempted by the new shiny-shiny, I couldn't justify spending 300+ on new hardware. My gaming is very much focused on handhelds, and my free time to use the PS3 ( or it's replacement) is massively restricted.

If I were to buy a next-gen console, it would almost certainly be the PS4. Sony would really have to cock up to make me switch to the XBox - mainly due to the cost of XBL Gold and the fact that I've grown up with the key Sony exclusive IPs

they show no signs of being required in anything so far. The basic pack doesn't even include a sensor bar. I'll wager you could get through the generation without really needing one, if you pick up a pro controller instead.

I'll do what I did last time - wait for both to be released and judge it on the exclusives. Although I have gone MS for the last two generations...

The clips I'd seen of NintendoLand all seemed to require them for multiplayer. Can you use pro controller for those games instead?

dunno, I'll check the back of the box. I haven't even loaded it up to be honest; why would you buy a game like Nintendoland if you didn't want to use a wii remote?

I've had bad wiimote experiences. They've scarred me deep.

That said, I've been playing on our wii again this weekend, and since we've decorated/got a new TV stand/sofa is away from TV a bit more.... things seem a bit more "stable" when it comes to wiimotes.

if it's performance / jerkiness you're bothered about then I think the extra power in the console makes for a more fluid wiimote+ experience (I don't know if older wii remotes sans plus are even supported).

All I know is I've not touched a wii remote since getting mine on launch day, it's been 98% gamepad with a little bit of pro-pad in sonic&all-stars racing.

I'm really quite excited, but I hope they do something with the bloody dualshock, I do hate it so.

Or quite possibly some other bit of PlayStation hardware, Kaz has already said that they'd let Microsoft show their hand before they would so it may not be PS4.
