Wotcha.

Just trying to get a bit of an opinion here. Should AATG jump on the gamesite bandwagon and attempt to do a Game of the Year - Top ten games type of thing as we have previously?

These articles usually involve a stupeeedo amount of work and of course they're useless without you - and your opinions. So should we? Or should we just sit Mrs Apathy on our laps and let her jiggle around a bit instead?

Ummm. Instead of the kind of article we did last year how about anyone who wants to take part votes on a few catergories (GOTY, disappointment of the year etc) and writes a short paragraph on each?

One game of the year each and a para or two, linking to the review (etc) might be pretty cool? Also like DD's idea of disappointment of the year.

I'm just throwing this out there, but seeing as every other site pretty much has "game of the year" articles well covered, why not play to this site's niche and do "British game of the year", or something, sticking to UK-developed games.

Well how about one GOTY each and one DOTY each? :-)

So many huge games this year, feels like some sort of GOTY article is required. Even I'll have played a couple of games relevant to proceedings.

/will vote for iM@S2, regardless

Eh?

I'll be happy to write a paragraph or so for whatever my GOTY turns out to be.

I don't think I will have played all of this years games until early next year.

Dark Souls would probably entertain me for a month.
Skyrim is another endless game
Uncharted I will probably finish in a day or two. (Sadly, I want it to last longer, but it can't)
Then there is also that Rayman game, which could actually be amazing.

In any case my top 10 will just be the list of all the games I've bought this year... :)

I do like our GOTY malarky.

Disappointment of the year might be more hotly contested than usual...

How about a "recommend three games" kind of thing? At least one has to be a download title.

Personally I think game of the year articles are a bit of a waste of time. They're ten'a'penny around Christmas time and I can never be bothered to read them all.

Another vote for DD's idea of disappointment of the year here though, and perhaps the idea could be extended to include other, more original and interesting awards? My vote would be for a 'Most Patronising Advertising' award - so many contenders to choose from!

Another idea could be to approach it from a slightly different perspective and create a 'Year in Gaming', that describes the significant games that have been released this year, as a timeline -it's similar to a GotY idea but you don't have to worry about gathering votes.

I definitely had in mind that there would be 'top 5 disappointments of the year' somewhere included in any roundup article. But if everyone could just write a paragraph on each (game of the year / disappointment of the year) that'd definitely be a start.

As with any GOTY articles, I think they're all a bit dry and poncy unless they're comprised of a collective of a site's users giving their opinions. And like previous years I think it's fair to push the definition a bit and let people nominate stuff they've played this year rather than necessarily concentrating on releases from this year.

I think this could work if we create a list of unusual and amusing categories.

Best use of swearing in a video game.
Worst game to play when tripping out of your mind.
Most generic FPS of the year.

Etc etc.

This is good, I like it!

Sexiest videogame arse of the year has to be a category.

Lots of competition for the most generic fps ;) Also, best use of swearing has to be Bulletstorm with epic stuff like 'murder boner' :D

Bulletstorm instantly came to mind for me too.

An alternative list of categories would definitely be a winner for me. It means we can 'reward' games that might not otherwise get another mention too.

A few more category ideas:

Shittiest use of the 'season pass'
Worst Quick Time event in a videogame
Worst marketing / PR
The "how on earth did this ever get a sequel?" award
Worst Indie Marketplace / Indie Game
Stupidest Avatar item to spend 240 points on
Game most likely to make you want to mash your joypad into the nearest brick wall

I'd like to make the inevitable call for a list of which games were actually released this year, as I've already forgotten.

Me too - and worse - I have that short a memory that a lot of the truly awesome stuff from Q1/Q2 has been lost in the mire. Definitely going to big up LBP2 and LA Noire though.

I tried to get sneaky with my game purchases and stick 'em all on a shelf of this year's releases together, but the shelf rapidly got too full to keep 'em that way.

I remember when I did our 'Top 50 (or was it Top 100, I can't remember clearly) games of all time' article, and got loads of others to vote via other social networking and forum means.

I can't remember how many votes from how many different people I had, or how many words I wrote, but I seem to remember about 32,000 words written in the end, in about five evenings.

Never. Again.

Good man. I'd forgotten that Wikipedia tends to have a list of these things.

Is it just me or has it not been a great year for games thus far? There's been a handful of decent games but it seems like most of the games worth playing this year haven't yet been released.

That list was quite a relief actually. Browsing down it, I haven't bought as many games this year as I thought I had...but I agree Neko, it feels like a year that's had a bunch of titles all launching in Q4 (as usual) while the rest of the year has been pretty sparse.

Wii releases are quite telling on that list. Nintendo really are doing what they always do with their home hardware...!

Posted a blank post by mistake and was in the process of editing it, did someone just delete it? :)

Anyway, I wonder how many people will remember Portal 2 by the end of the year? Was highly-praised by almost everyone, and still my personal GOTY (though I really haven't played much else), but after the Q4 rush I can't see many websites picking it for their GOTY.
