Just around the corner now! Have to say I had very little interest until recently, but now I'm really looking forward to it. Could be partly because it nicely fills the gaps between seasons :-)

Anyone like to guess at the England squad? Based on injuries and current form I'd go:

Goalkeepers:
Hart (James, Robinson)

Defenders:
G. Johnson, Terry, Dawson, A.Cole (Ferdinand, Shawcross, King)

Midfielders:
Lennon, Gerrard, Barry, Lampard, Milner (A. Johnson, J. Cole, Carrick)

Forwards:
Rooney (Bent, Crouch, Defoe)

A few omissions there I know. Green and Upson (very poor form of late), Brown (has been injured for ages), SWP and Young (I'd take Lennon, Johnson and Cole above these any day of the week), Zamora and Cole who I'm still unsure are good enough, and yes I'd start Dawson above Ferdinand, allowing for recent form and injuries.

I fear that when Rooney inevitably breaks down injured we'll fail due to our lack of fire-power. We're so predictable.

I'm looking forward to all the motorways and A-roads being littered with england flags that have blown off cars.

No really.

Indeed. It's quite worrying just how much England are going to have to rely on Rooney in this.

Looking at the rest of the squad is kind of worrying. If we're talking genuine world class, then I think based on recent form the only two players we have are Lampard and Rooney. I think Cole could be included in that too but there's still question marks since he's just got back from injury.

The elaborate thread title made me think this was going to be about the EA game! :)

Really looking forward to it though - I'm taking most of June off so I can watch as many matches as possible. Only problem is a potential holiday abroad might see me miss the first six days of matches. Sad, I know, but that's a really big deal to me.

Couldn't give a shit about England btw, but the matches should be interesting. Even with Capello I can't see them making it past the QFs.

Yeah, you know what, I'm with Kay: fuck England.

Wait, I mean... let me put that another way. Ahaha.

It's a World Fucking Cup (note the caps).

Yeah, it'll be nice to see our nation progress, but that's just not what it's about for me.

It's about watching Brazil occasionally remind everyone why it's called the Beautiful Game, in between remembering that - yes - they'd quite like to win, thankyouverymuch, so maybe it's a good idea to stop fucking around and [park the bus]/[actually put the fucking ball in the net, sort of thing]/[pretend a ball that quite clearly hit your midriff somehow fractured your skull] (delete where appropriate).

It's about hating German Efficiency. (Pre-1985 = "Boring your opposition into letting you win")

And Italian Defending. (It's called defending now, but I believe we used to call it "cheating".)

It's about wondering who will flatter to deceive before choking spectacularly (usually Spain), who won't even get far enough to do any flattering and just crash straight out of the first group stage (France, hopefully), and marveling at the technical abilities of all those funny-named little countries who are capable of showing us a thing or two with a ball and two feet, but don't yet have a national anthem.

It's about spending half a month in a sleepless near-permanent state of over-exposure, making ever-more elaborate excuses in order to somehow fit in that fixture-that-doesn't-actually-mean-anything-but-there's-this-guy-who-can-[insert outrageous skill here]. And then spending the rest of it with withdrawal symptoms because - fucking god-dammit - that next fucking fixture is TWO WHOLE FUCKING DAYS AWAY ALREADY.

It's about Maradona and that hand. It's about Roberto Baggio and that penalty. It's about Harald Schumacher and that "tackle".

Oh, and occasionally some dudes score some outrageously good goals - them too.

And then... it's over. And things feel... empty.

That's what it's about. It's about how empty the world is when it's over.

It's like the biggest party ever, and all this? What we're doing now? For the past four years? We've been cleaning up the vomit, while suffering from a bit of a hangover.

Wow, that analogy just works on so many levels. Surprised myself with that one.

In fact (wait for it...), it's that big a thing to me (waaaaiiiittt for it...), I'm considering getting Freesat JUST for it. Anyone else got Freesat? (BAM - point reached.)

Hah, sounds good to me Stevas! Apart from the part about France or Germany. If they do well I will probably end up wearing my Ballack or Malouda shirts with pride ;)

I'll of course be supporting England though, mostly. Them and Serbia. Come on Serbia!! o/

Freesat is pretty ace by the way - I got my parents a G10 for Christmas which has it built in, great picture quality and I'd definitely recommend it as a way to get into HD viewing!

(although getting a Sky HD box and cancelling the HD after a year is also a good option?)

Don't really wanna have to fork out for Sky... the cost of that versus Freesat is going to be quite high isn't it? I mean, I'm guessing. Freesat seems to be around the 200 quid mark, and a one off fee.

Also: PREDICTIONS PEOPLE.
I'm going for Argentina. Though only because everyone will be man marking Messi with their entire midfield and forgetting there's actually a ball on the pitch and goals and other players and stuff.

Well, Sky HD is £10 a month with £30 installation - so it could work out cheaper, and you'd get a nice recordy box too :-)

But! If you have no interest in any of the Sky stuff, or Sky Plus then Freesat is a very good option, I don't know if it's even possible to get HD stuff with Sky once you've cancelled.

Don't think Argentina will win it, they only barely qualified! Amazing team with a seemingly quite terrible manager :p

Isn't it only £10 a month on top of your existing Sky bill?

Right, yeah, I'd have to get Sky THEN get Sky HD on top of that.
Anyone know about BT Vision? They've been bleating on about getting their boxes working with freeview HD for 2 fucking years now, and my contract is up soon.

It's now called 'anti-football'. You know, where the opposition team don't let Barcelona or Arsenal walk all over them.

Is Heskey fit yet? If he is then replace one of the midfielders with him. He's shite but it seems to work with him in the line up.

Where is Walcott in your list? I would be surprised if King goes, I wouldn't be surprised if Ferdinand doesn't go with his fitness.

Something looks off with that midfield but I can't think what. Someone obvious is missing (not Beckham cos he's broken).

Don't think anyone's missing from the midfield really Micro. Sad to say but that's pretty much it.

Maybe you could throw Walcott in like you said, but personally I'd pick Lennon, Milner, Cole and Johnson above him. Although I wouldn't be overly surprised it he went instead of the latter!

Who knows though really. Capello has got a lot of choices to make, although it wouldn't surprise me if he went for the predictable and 'safe' options.

Walcott doesn't 'deserve' to go at all. He's been very underwhelming and I think it may actually do him good not go get picked. It may buck him up a bit.

He really did have the world at his feet, but since those shoulder injuries, he's been nowhere near as good. Probably unrelated, but I can't fathom why he's suddenly turned so mediocre. His touch is absolutely appaling these days.

My Fave World Cup Goal.

Who shoots from there? Who the fuck gets to there and thinks "yeah, fuck you guys: I KNOW I should be crossing, but I've spotted something else..."

My favourite WC goal, btw. Absolute class.

Hey, guys, I'm doing the O2 thing where you get money for goals, so I can either:

Get £5 for every goal England score
Get £5 for every goal England let in

What's the best bet?

Definitely goals scored I'd say. Something will have gone drastically wrong if England come back with a negative goal difference.

Yeah, England won't let in more than they score overall. They might draw a lot or you might only make £5 but that's a pretty safe bet.

Indeed.

Even worse is the fact it's completely consistent, throughout the entire match. I hate it when people say "Well, that's what they do, it's interesting to hear different things at a football match, I'd rather hear that than chanting" simply because chanting has variety and meaning.

Those things are just f**king on constantly from the first minute to the last!

Yeah, they are totally killing any atmosphere which is really quite sad. Getting to hear the different chants, songs and sounds from countries who I don't normally get to witness is one of the best things about the World Cup!
