There's a fair few dad forumites on here so have you got any great free time making, expensive stuff defending tips?

My wife found a cracker of a tip online after she went searching for something to stop my year old daughter hitting my HDTV's screen with the remote. If you buy that slightly spikey plastic grass that they have/used to have in butchers windows, babies won't stand on it. It sounds ridiculous but so far she's not once tried to attack my TV or games machines.

Doesn't look to fancy mind

I think that actually looks just the ticket for a bit of Wii Sports action :)

I took a tip from Mike_Hunt about my AV gear and bought a stout piece of perspex for the front of the telly shelving. Everything's behind that, and so far it's successfully resisted her various attempts to get at the kit behind it. It's a bit of a pain in the bum to change disks on the Wii (which is behind the perspex) but it works so far. No pop tarts have been posted through the VCR's slot yet.

The telly downstairs is a CRT, so it's practically bomb proof but after one of my friends came back in from the garden to find his 3 year old painting his Plasma's screen with nail varnish, I'm more than a bit paranoid that my near-toddler's going to do something that's going to cost me an arm and a leg before long...

I'm not sure Emma is old enough for games yet, might try her out on Wii Play, or get Let's Tap and see if she knows what's going on.

My nipper's not old enough for games, and I'm sort of secretly hoping she doesn't get into them as she has practically no exposure to them at the moment - but we'll see. I can think of a few suitable Wii / DS bits and bobs she can cut her teeth on if she wants to get into gaming...

At the moment she's obsessed with her Tomy MagicDraw thing (it's like a huge sheet of semi-transluscent material, you draw on it with pens you fill with water and the water soaks the material, creating a design - bloody genius and means you don't get a nipper covered in paint, or for that matter a rainbow-coloured lounge / carpet!)

Best 20 quid we've spent on her so far I think.

If you've hacked your Wii try Kids Paint. There's even an easy mode which just requires you to point at the screen, with no buttons whatsoever! Plus multiplayer.

My 8-9 year old cousins quickly got bored of it, though.

I think I was lucky - when Izzy was that sort of age she didn't really show an interest in my electronica, especially after a few "Noooo"s.

"Nooo" doesn't work with my nipper. Not even when it's delivered with "The Voice of God" (a cross between James Earl Jones and Keith Flint from The Prodigy)

That is indeed "The Voice Of God" that I also attempt ! Still, the first time I shouted at her, she actually fell over in surprise !

:)

My nipper's more likely to just laugh, which makes me laugh - and of course that completely undermines the Voice of God.

I am rubbish at being bad cop. My wife's great at it though so thankfully she wades in if I'm being particularly rubbish.
