Both deeply flawed. ICO has stupid fighting, overplayed "emotion" and terrible controls. SOTC was pretty decent until baddies started launching rockets at you

Fair enough. :)

To counter your "overplayed emotion" point (though please don't take this to sound argumentative), the game has, like, three cutscenes and practically zero music until the very end. I think it's one of the few games where the emotion is truly your own. If you care about Yorda, then it's pretty much because of you, because the game itself gives you very little material to work with.

With SotC, on the other hand, I'd say the emotion was artificial and rammed down my throat by the game. I don't need it to play sad music every time I kill a colossus in order to tell me how to feel about it.

You're not supposed to be there, and you're not supposed to be doing what you are doing, but someone or something wants you to. The colossi are vessels that only exist to prevent something from happening, but at the time they were brought into being there was an opposing influence which I imagine would have done everything in its power to make it possible to, er... undo. Hence the scaffold.

That really doesn't make a lot of sense does it? :)

Speaking of Team Ico Gamers, their blog has an interesting article on a discarded alternate ending that was going to be in SotC:

Alternate ending

The concept was to have an entirely new ending should the player have a save file from ICO on the memory card.

Lord Emon and his soldiers arrive at the Shrine of Worship, see Wander and attack him. They punish him for completing a ritual that reconnects a soul of a dead person to her body.

Mono is revived, and her body starts to glow. One of the soldiers notices this is happening and he tries to stab her with his sword. The blow doesn't land for some magic is protecting her; it just doesn't connect to her body, goes through her and the sword gets stuck in the stone.

As they see this Lord Emon and his company flee in terror, sealing the land, leaving Wander and Mono in the Shrine.

Now, we already know Wander's body changes throughout the duration of his sixteen battles. So when Mono awakens and her eyes do not yet function well, she reaches for Wander. She can feel that Wander has indeed changed, much more after his last battle. We see this scene through the blind eyes and thoughts of Mono. We do not see how Wander changed, not yet.

Credits start rolling while the two mount Agro and ride off the Shrine.

The hawk, the same one from the beginning, flies over them as Agro carries Wander and Mono away. The camera closes on the horse, and we finally see Wander's appearance. Horns protrude from his head and he looks more a shadow than a human being.

This whole ending idea was scrapped because the majority of the team felt it would be unfair on those who never played ICO to never be able to see this different epilogue.

There's some more interesting stuff in there, if you're into hardcore details.

I was given a green tea kit kat by one of our Japanese students.

It was foul. Actually was green, and actually tasted like munching on the contents of a raw teabag.

New trailer and some making-of footage. Perfect for those like me who thrive on any drop of new info about this game :)

And who knew Fumito Ueda was such an attractive dude? Eh!? I mean, usually the best game makers must pay for their devil-given skill with the curse of hideousness and aesthetic mediocracy.

But Ueda? Can he fly, too?!

Nice find, although has to be said the new trailer doesn't show much. Still looks lovely though. :)

Not sure where I sit on the attractiveness of Ueda...:) But one thing I was suprised by is how young he is - he doesn't look like he's any older than his early 30's to me, I always thought he was much older than that.

But, no, he's up there with Kojima's translator :O

See, it's no wonder I pictured him as an ugly recluse, when he gives an interview as guarded as this.

If you'd never seen him, you'd think he was some kind of prick.

My favourite comment from that article:

Ellie: I'm completely out of jokes - can you help?
Fumito: No. I don't think so.

Meh, I can think of only three who'd qualify and out of those, one's just a translator.

CLEARLY IT'S A SUBJECT I DON'T PONDER, OFTEN.

I'm happy to wait for TLG, but I want ICO/SotC dammit!

Not clicked the link, but assume we're talking 2012 for TLG. Any indication on a date for ICO/SotC collection?

No, no indication at all. For either of the games.

I don't mind that they are delayed. I've been meaning to play SotC since it was released so a few more month don't matter. Besides I don't plan my life around release dates. :)

Bet they're glad they're dev'ing on the PS3, with the state Sony is in, there's no chance they'll have to port it to a successor console before it's finished.

Gamestop cancels pre-orders says game is dead.

Sony America says "oh no it isn't!"

Ueda:

"It's difficult to explain [the decision to go freelance], but in a nutshell it was because I felt a sense of crisis within myself about a lot of things. It's hard to [say exactly what], but in terms of my own growth and career and so on."

Asked what Sony's reaction was, Ueda explained "it was not easy. I can't go into the details just yet. It will be good to be able to discuss it along with a post-mortem of The Last Guardian someday".

Yikes, sounds like an utter disaster

It does sound like Ueda himself was having some personal issues, whether or not they were related to the weight of expectation on The Last Guardian or not I suspect we'll never know.

To be honest, in some ways I wish Sony would just can it - clearly, it's a project in trouble and if it's not even in a showable state now, it's surely going to be a matter of years before it actually makes it to release, if ever. And I'd much rather see Ueda and Team Ico set to work on new projects that can be freed from the weight of expectation that The Last Guardian has built up.
