Got my parcel yesterday Hairy :-)

Not touched GT5 as I wanted to get a head start on the Marvel game. About a third of the way through it at the moment. Review should be done for Monday at the latest if that is okay?

Due to having to work all weekend my review might be a day late.

I did get chance to fire a few of the VGA trailers in the news section ;-)

Is anybody doing a review for PoP HD?

Saw it for sale and I'm thinking of buying it in Bluray but wanted a opinion on how good is the port.

And having to work 12 hour shifts Monday and Tuesday means it will be Wednesday afternoon before I get to finish the game and then write the review!

I'm six levels in and haven't even got to play as Spider-Man yet ;-)

Apparently POP 1 is an excellent conversion (largely because it was a very good game and art style to begin with), the other two aren't anything special.

I already have Grubbins, Peej.

I may be able to do a few words next week, after I sort the truth or dare thingy.

Why don't you do a sign up and win compo for it on the front page?

Get some fresh blood in here :D

I would but I remember the absolute ballache it was the last time I did one of those "win a code" competitions here, got snowed under and ended up having to create a huge piece of script to randomly pick some winners.

I'll have a look meself. I quite liked Costume Quest but thought I'd offer it out to everyone else first.

We've done compos before too but unfortunately the demand is never quite what it should be. You'd think the internets would be all over that shit too?

Last one I ran (or was on the end of an email address for) was the Champions Online Beta Key compo. That went absolutely nuts in fact I think I was still getting mails about it up till about a month ago.

There's the thing. Beta keys generate a shitload of short term newcomers...but none of the buggers stuck around, bah!

Sorry to be a pain Peej, but the splash images are from the original game and not Infinity Gauntlet. There are some screens here you could use.

I changed the video to a trailer of the new game too ;-)

Is it worth doing any more of the '2nd Opinion' features, even if it is for older titles. I'll be honest the only time I'll review a new game is when I get a promo from here, as I purchase only from the bargain bins now ;-)

I've quite enjoyed writing a few reviews recently and it is nice to do something a bit creative for a change. Maybe the feature could be called 'Looking Back' and I just write a couple of paragraphs on what I thought of the game. It could be something we could all submit stuff for as it wouldn't be as time consuming to write as a full review.

I'll try and knock something up next week for you to give the once over :-D

I do the 'Letting the dust settle' articles/reviews, which are basically reviews of older titles (six months plus) that I have just played and can now give my opinion without any of the hype of the time doing the rounds, or having to complete it promptly for a review that has a time deadline.

If you haven't read one and have no idea what I'm on about, here's Uncharted 2 and Fallout 3

I've got one of those articles incoming for Darksiders. And another for Excite Truck (to go even further back).

I was going to suggest that if Joe didn't mind, the 'letting the dust settle' thing could be expanded to other gamers. I've got a few bits I'd love to cover that either weren't originally reviewed at release, or I've subsequently picked up on the cheap rather than on day of release and still reckon would be a decent review or re-review.

So Sil, KM, go for it. The more content the merrier.

Oh definitely. Was never intended to be just my thing. It was just a way for me to contribute to the site as, unless you guys send me review code (as I've stopped reviewing for almost every other site now as it was too time-consuming), I don't have the cash to get anything new and have to wait for birthdays/xmas or, more often than not, bargain bin dipping.

So yeah, go for it.

I wasn't try to steal your idea Kentmonkey, honest ;-)

My idea was rather than write full reviews of older titles I'd just write two or three paragraphs on my general opinion of the game. This way I'd be able to keep a more constant supply of content for the site and still do full reviews when I get a promo/buy a game on release.

Also the shorter format may encourage other people to contribute. We've had plenty on forum posts that would fit the bill perfectly.

My contribution to the GOTY feature probably best illustrates how I expect the articles to look -

Red Dead Redemption

As a massive fan of the Western film genre this is the game I have been wanting for years. Neversoft's Gun gave us a glimpse of the potential of an open world, wild west and Rockstar's latest game rises to the challenge. They have taken everything that makes the GTA games great and built on that to produce the best game of 2010.

What makes the game such a joy to play is not just the trademark excellent story telling we have come to expect from Rockstar, but the fact that there is so much to do in the game world. Recreating the vast open range of the American West could have posed a problem for the developers in keeping the game interesting. However what Rockstar came up with is probably it's most interactive open world game to date. There are loads of characters to interact with, random encounters, wildlife to shoot, bounty hunting, gun fights, train robberies and much more! Take the game online and you have a whole new set of challenges to complete, either on your own or with friends. Red Dead Redemption is a masterpiece and the next game is eagerly awaited.

Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4

The best Lego game since Star Wars: The Complete Saga and probably the most fun game I've played all year. LHP is absolutely brimmed full of content with 200 gold bricks, 24 red bricks, 50 students in peril, 96 house crests and 167 character tokens to find. The main story consists of 24 levels, 6 per year to cover the major events from each of the first four books and movies.

If this wasn't enough you get the whole of Hogwarts Castle and more as a huge hub world. The castle and it grounds can be freely explored throughout the 4 years of the main story. There are puzzles to solve and hidden content to be found. This is massive game with the focus firmly on exploration. Combat takes a back seat, which is no surprise as it is the Lego games weak point. Lego Harry Potter is a game that has been designed with only fun in mind and taking advantage of the 2 player co-op makes it an ideal family adventure!

Mass Effect 2

A superb sequel from Bioware which improves on nearly every aspect of the first game. Mass Effect 2 is the continuation of the story of Commander Shepard's efforts to defeat the Collectors and keep the galaxy safe.

This is an epic game with some outstanding graphics and gameplay to match. Gone is the texture pop-in from the first game and also the cookie cutter side quests. Now each mission, no matter how small, has a unique location and the game is all the better for it. The shooting mechanics are on par with most dedicated 3rd person shooters, with both team mate and enemy ai being much improved. My only criticism of the game would be the tedious planet scanning and scaling back of the upgrade system.

The best thing for me about the Mass Effect franchise is how Bioware have made the game feel personal to the player. You can import your character from the first game, where even the most minor of interactions can effect things in part 2. Whilst playing it felt it was the story of MY Shepard and I can't wait to see the consequences of my actions in Mass Effect 3.

Fallout: New Vegas

Whilst the game engine might be showing it's age Obsidian have produced a game which I feel outshines the great Fallout 3. The reason I prefer New Vegas is that I find the gameworld to be much more interesting than that in Fallout 3. I like the fact that there seems to be plenty going on that isn't centred around you or your actions. You still get all the great variety of quests to do and locations to explore, but I like how you seem to be a small part of a much bigger set of events.

I'm still not a fan of the combat and it pales in comparison to Mass Effect 2. I played the game post patch, so I haven't encountered too many bugs. There have been some horror stories though of people having loads of bother with the game; from not being able to complete quests, to the game crashing all the time. If you don't have access to PSN or Xbox Live then it might be best waiting for the inevitable GOTY version to hit the consoles.

FIFA 11

With FIFA 10 being such a good game many wondered if EA would be able to make much improvement in 11. The biggest change I've noticed is the passing and it makes a massive difference to the gameplay. The skill of the player has much effect on how accurate he can pass the ball, especially when trying to perform a one touch pass. It means it is much more difficult to quickly move the ball up field using a succession of first time passes. You have to be much more measured in your attacks, a bit like Barcelona or Spain.

Another nice addition is you can now be the goalkeeper in 'Be a Pro' mode and online. EA have also done some work on the career mode to make it more realistic and the Ultimate Team trading card game from 10 is free this time round too. Presentation is top drawer as always and you can import your own crowd chants this year! All the online modes are present and correct with full 11 v 11 available for the first time in the series. Another year where EA deliver the goods with FIFA!

Each of the above would be one article. These would just be a general view on why you like or dislike a game. Maybe if the format takes off a thumbs up/thumbs down rating system could be incorporated, where people could search for a title and see all the positive & negative comments.

Getting well ahead of myself now ;-)

That's it exactly.

If it takes off it would be great to be able to search for a game and see all the bite-sized opinions on it. I suppose it would be a bit like the product reviews on Amazon, but hopefully much better written!

Sounds like a plan. The site's not structurally set up for one article that everyone could add bits too but there's no limit set on how many times a game can get coverage (in fact I'm sure developers and publishers would welcome people revisiting their stuff sometime after the dust has settled - just so they know that the reviewer or writer did actually put in some effort into playing it and didn't just blart out a piece of text in order to shout "FIRST!")

Particularly recently, "day one" reviews seem to be haphazardly thrown together just to race something out to press, and end up on a developer's tweet roll for an early review. Easy enough to do if you're a site that only does this 24/7, not so easy to compete if you're a site like this where everyone gives up their precious time freely just to write about and be passionate about games.
