Well, downloaded the PS3 demo thanks to the *extremely* nice Rhythm, and what do I think.

I *like*. Looks great, very atmospheric, spooky sound, controls very nicely.

But....

I thought all this about the original FEAR demo when I downloaded it for PC all those moons ago, and went on to be massively disappointed in a game far more devoid of 'spooky shit' and more concerned with the next firefight in another anonymous building.

So; love the demo, but I'll wait until I've read some reviews to see how it compares with what people thought of the first before I put down my monies.

But this game was barely on my radar for purchase, now it's almost definate. Just a matter of how soon :)

Oh, and apparently a US site is saying the FEAR 2 demo will be available for all next week.

Really interested in this, loved the fire fights in FEAR, and even enjoyed the multiplayer with the other 6 people playing it on the 360.

Location variety looks to have increased which can only be a good thing after the endless office.

I thought the original had some nice gunplay, but wouldn't have touched the 360 versh with a barge pole. As a system-stretcher on the PC it was very pretty and didn't have any performance issues, but playing the 360 demo just left me cold. It lacked the detail and could've done with a serious leg-up.

Should be interesting to see how this stacks up against the big FPS titles of the year though. Retroid extolling its virtues does make my eyebrows raise a centimetre or two though. Just a centimetre.

I did enjoy FEAR, even though it seemed to go on forever with dull identikit locations and very few 'scary' moments. The combat was great, and the finale was done very nicely imo.

Last trailer I saw of this suggested more interesting locations and enemies, so I'm very much looking forward to trying it - demo's out this week apparently.

It very much depends on how thinkly they stretch the 'weird shit' this time around, I loved it in the original's demo but it was just *far* too thin in the game itself.

Oh, and it looks (to me) like it's using the same engine as Condemned 2, which managed some nice things. one or two framerate issues in the demo at points but it did get busy so I'll forgive it.

Should have a fairly decent run and gun cover mechanic then, at least - if it's based on Condemned 2 those were bits that weren't hideously buggered up.

One thing I did like in the original was the frenetic firefights and the feeling that when you were under fire, you were seriously copping a lot of flak. Hopefully that hasn't been watered down.

The whole "weird-shit-o-meter" thing passed me by in F.E.A.R 1. Not weird enough for my tastes.

I got my subs copy of PC Zone on Saturday, where it's reviewed. I only skimmed through it but they didn't think it was as good as the first one, I'll have to read it properly tonight.

Did you play it to the end? Most of the weird stuff was saved for the last level, iirc.

I did indeed and as I said, it wasn't weird enough for me. There were a few moments of Max Payne-esque surreal shit but not really jarring.

If the PC version supports joypads that's the demo I'm after, otherwise 360 please :)

Fair enough.

There are certain games on the PC that I wouldn't play with Mouse and Keyboard. Mirror's Edge is a good example. Just not a M / K game for me. Nor is GTA 4.

Mirror's Edge is apparently excellent with kb/m. Makes sense I guess, it is still a first-person game after all.

I'm waiting for the demo for that, just to see how it changes things because I can't imagine being quite as quick to react with keyboard / mouse as I am with a joypad for this one.

In theory though it should work quite nicely and should at least allow you to look around a little easier.

Keyboard and mouse is more accurate and responsive, but I spend all day in the PC hunch so I'd rather play stuff on a pad when I'm not working. I think I've grown to prefer the feel of it too.

Been through the original four times now on the 360. Loved those firefights... even if the game looked a bit ropey.

FEAR Files was a bit shit, somehow. Have high hopes for this though.

I preferred Bioshock with the pad, though occasionally for really hard battles I'd revert.

Currently really enjoying my console gaming on PC since I got a 4870 and a 27" monitor.

PCZ's summary is thus :

Graphics : outdoor bits look amazing
Sound : some incredible music
Multiplayer : it's here, nothing special

+Fantastic action
+Coherent plot
-Cover system doesn't work
-Environments still samey
-Far too easy

80% Lacking original F.E.A.R.

From reading the text it's good but not great and the complaint about the cover system is that it takes far too long to knock cover into a useful position, especially while you're under fire, so you're better off just shooting everyone. Game length is supposed to be 10 hours.

I never actually got around to finishing the first game so I thought I'd reinstall with the latest patch, blimey I'd forgotten how annoying the bob was in this and while a lot of it looks decent it's really showing its age now.

It was nice running it at 1680x1050 with everything maxed and getting an average frame rate of 120 in the benchmark (lowest was 49), something I'm sure wouldn't have been possible on any PC back in 2005!* :-)

*widescreen resolutions weren't supported on release for one thing...

Hmmm...

Given how much people seemed to love the original (and I didn't), I'll have to see what the average comes out as.

Metacritic is always useful for finding the pickiest & most optimistic buggers.

10 hours? \o/ A game that I might get somewhere close to finishing then.

I quite like the first F.E.A.R. but it did become dull after a while of walking around those offices with guns - I can do that any day of the week. A bit more variation and it would have been excellent.

Nice! Not seen the pc marketplace before, quite snazzy. Much more impressive than the Games for Windows one I downloaded yesterday.
