An AATG swapsies system is something I've talked about building for ages now and it's finally about to happen.

I've got the bare bones of it working and will be opening it up for you to all test pretty soon but before I do, I wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions for features they'd like implementing.

As the system currently is, you offer games up for swap and they're saved against your profile. Games are chosen from the AATG games database so if a game isn't already in there you have to add it manually. You will then be able to browse the most recent swaps, browse by user or just search for all games and then initiate a swap.

So for example if I have FIFA 09 up for swap and in my notes against this listing I say "I will swap for Fallout3", and you have Fallout 3 and are prepared to swap it for FIFA then you will request a swap by clicking the soon to appear button in my profile. If we both agree on the swap then that transaction is initiated and both swaps are completed. Then once the items have been received by both parties you'll be able to give each foodback and we'll all yet another stat to save against our profiles.

I'm hoping that this could be the one thing that makes AATG stand out above other sites and if it gets popular just from having a great swapsies system then that'll do me!

I'm also going to make it so that when we review a game, if anyone has that game available to swap, you'll see it under the article.

So, ideas? Suggestions? Criticisms?

My brain actually hurts from building this fucker today.

Ooooh, sounds very interesting.

A little indicator of where in the world the swapper is could be useful, so if you don't want to spend too much money on shipping you can immediately rule out those not living in your country without having to ask where they life first.

Definitely up for this, although I've tried kicking the thread off on here about 6-7 times over the past year, and nothing ever happens. Nobody adds anything, nobody offers anything...nadda.

As long as people use it (and I can't see why they shouldn't, we've all probably got review code we'd love to get shot of for something else, as well as stuff we've bought) I think it'd be a great addition.

Argh, moral dilemma approaching - really I've always promised myself I'd always buy games myself to support the industry and all that, but this sounds tempting.

More tempting though for me right now would be a similar system for books - I'm reading loads lately and I've got a whole stack of books that I'll probably never use again that I'd be willing to swap. Any chance if the games database goes well of doing a similar thing for books, Hairy? (And yes, I realise it's probably a load of work, sorry :)).

That's not a bad idea at all Nekotcha. And it would only really take a slight tweaking of the system.

I've half built it to tie in with the site's current games database so that I can link everything together, i.e. we review a game or write a news story for a game announcing some new DLC or something and you can quickly and easily see who is offering that game up for swaps. But there's no reason why I couldn't make that tie in optional so in theory you could offer anything up for swaps.

Leave it with me and as I further develop what I've already done, we'll see where it goes. But the thought had already crossed my mind - I even contemplated a sort of mini ebay listing for users, which could still yet happen. I'm just trying to incorporate things to make the site stand out and encourage anything that's unique to the site.

We need a 'condition' flag on things. For me, a review copy of a game is worth less than a retail copy.

But it sounds like a great idea. I'm not sure about this idea of registering swaps against specific wanted games, since if I'm putting up a game for swap it's just because I don't need it any more - I just want something else to replace it, as long as it's of roughly equivalent swap value. I might have specific games on my wanted list, but I'm not fussed about which game I'd get for which swap.

It might also be cool to have a list of systems recorded, for retro swaps.

Liking the idea and Mal's right, Retail vs Review copies should definitely be made clear at the point of swaps. Feedback is a great idea too so that good and bad swappers (not saying we'd ever get any bad ones here but you know what I mean) get credit where credit's due.

Book swapping also sounds good.

Great! I have lots to swap but the EG swapsies are too much hard work and effort.

I also have lots of books I buy and then put on the shelf although I don't intend to read them again.

Book swapping sounds good... even though I never buy any books, more of a library user. But I have a few lying around, and it'll be a good way of getting to read people's recommendations.

Also - sorry for being pedantic, but that title spelling error really needs to be fixed. :p

Blinding idea. Of course, utterly useless to me, as I only buy about 3 games a year!

Really good idea!

I've bought a pile of games from EGers, but never actually sent anything the other way.

It's too much effort to post a list of games in a different thread every month. A dedicated system sounds ace.

/starts banging his head on a brick wall for the postage :D

The one thing with manually adding, how will you stop the 'Fifa 09' and 'Fifa '09' plagued by the facility to add.

Also, can you make a game called 'cash'?

Almost ready to launch this for testing.

Who's up for trialling it for me? Should be ready by the weekend.

OK if anyone wants to help test this very early beta then here's what you need to do:

The main swapsies URL is here.

It should be all fairly self explanatory but here are a few things you need to know, or that I already know don't work.

1) You need to edit your profile and add your postal address. This will only ever be shown to people you agree a swap with. You will then need to list a few random items. None of the swaps that occur while we're testing need to be real so fee free to put any old wacky items.

2) I know that upon editing your profile, the confirmation message from stevas hovers in the middle of the page.

3) When you accept a request, the email says click accept or decline here - only it's not a URL yet so doesn't work. You can accept or decline by viewing your offers from the main menu though.

4) I've not yet checked for typos or grammatical errors.

5) Nothing has been tarted up yet, it's just basic pages.

6) You will only be able to test the system if you are logged in.

7) There is no field validation or anything else like that yet.

Please list any other bugs below.
