I bought a car yesterday, a rather splendid 2004 Ford C-MAX 1.8 Zetec. And though I'm fairly certain of my driving abilities I'm well aware I'm not much of a navigator.

After all, once Bill Door and I were driving from Lancaster to Bridgend (South Wales) and ended up in Northampton.

So I've decided to get a GPS system for the car. Now to be honest my navigation isn't that bad, but as my Fiance lives further into London than my sleepy Essex location I'm going to be driving in lots of unfamiliar areas.

So can anyone recommend particular GPS units? What's so great about the ones you have, or bad about them?

Cost isn't an issue. But I don't see the need to spend loads of money, I want to find my way to locations and postcodes not fly a bomb into downtown Baghdad.

I know someone who wanted to go from Oxford to Bristol, they almost got to Southampton.

TomTom is probably the best one I know of - pretty accurate and not that expensive.

TomTom Go all the way. I really wouldn't bother with any other GPS kits. My boss paid 700 for a hard drive based one that is the most clumsy and clunky piece of shit I've ever had the displeasure to use. His won't even stick to the fucking windscreen properly.

Having tried a few, they *all* have major navigational faults in places. I'm reasonably happy with my 99 Garmin (which acts as a hands-free bluetooth kit as well) at the moment but as soon as the community-managed models are out I'll be swapping to one

I'm quite happy with my TomTom but I've never tried anything else, so I can't really claim it's the best out there.
