Superman 3 - Really terrible, worse than 4. At least that had a 'this is so bad it's funny' angle to it. This feels too much of a cynical cash in by someone who doesn't really know how to do a cash-in.

New Star Trek - First hour is pretty good, probably the best blockbuster movie action out this year. Amusing and a decent script. The second half is just generic sci-fi dullness with occasional flashes of goodness but the characters just about hold it together.

Star Trek 2 - It certainly isn't bad but it isn't exactly a cinematic masterpiece. It's a little bit plodding, it feels as though it was made with a budget that was pasted in front of the writers eyes all the time they were writing it. Saved by some pretty decent performances in places and above average writing.

Spock makes the film really.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang - Standard Downey Jr performance, to a point where I don't think he's actually acting. It's just how he is. Funny though, even if Val Kilmer steals the entire film and not in a bad way for a change. 'Tis funny.

Quantum of Solace - really not sure what I made of it. Didn't enjoy it nearly as much as most of the other Bond movies.

Taken - Bloody loved it. The moment when Neeson is among the scumbags and says "You don't remember me, do you? We spoke on the phone..." was utterly brilliant. First thing he's done in a long time that made me like him.

Taken reminds me of Man on Fire. Liam vs Denzel would make for an awesome film.

Terminator: Salvation - The best thing you can say about it is that it isn't as bad as T3. But otherwise, Christian Bale makes for an absolutely hateful John Connor (the guy just comes across as being a prick... there's no way you can imagine humanity rallying behind him), it's absolutely full of logic holes (Connor's infiltration of Skynet's fortified base is apparently so trouble-free that it's not worth showing on film at all), and the biggest twist of the film is completely sign-posted in the first minute. Production design is weak (when a Terminator film is clearly taking inspiration from Michael Bay's Transformers you can be pretty sure something is very wrong) and although there's at least one very cool reference to T1/2, it doesn't manage to come anywhere close to emulating their quality.

Daredevil - Director's Cut. The actual character of Daredevil is one of the more interesting Marvel characters, in many ways like a poorer and gadget free version of Batman - especially from a Batman: Year One angle. This film made him a drug addicted, murdering dick that was impossible to find any sympathy for or to really care whether he beat the enemy or not.

Kingpin is tacked on, Colin Farrell is overly campy, the music is abysmal (oh, he's bad so he must listen to shouty rock shite), crotch shots of the hero not seen since Batman and Robin and a script that is written by a guy thinking "this sounds cool". He was wrong.

Jennifer Garner was pretty much the only redeeming feature, other than it making it obvious that there is potential for a fantastic superhero film to be made for Daredevil. Fox won't be the one's that do it though.

Also seen recently: Up - It's good but I wasn't paying much attention (because it wasn't a great quality picture) and it certainly isn't one of their most exciting films. Well made and less sentimental than some Pixar films get, especially given it's about an old guy mourning the loss of his wife and the life he thought they would have together.

There are some of the funniest and also most touching moments of any Pixar film, the dog is one of the best characters they've ever created. The kid is never the slightest bit irritating either which is a rare feat.

Have you seen Bolt? Granted, it's not Pixar, and it has some of the world's most irritating people providing the voice work. But it's got John Lasseter co-producing, and unlike the previous Disney film he co-produced (Meet the Robinsons) it does feel as much Pixar as it does Disney. And regarding the voice artists, I didn't twig who any of them were until I read the reviews afterwards.

It does tread a fine line between twee and 'awww' but it worked for me. It's not a classic, like much of Pixar's output is - but it's better than a Bug's Life (and possibly better than Cars and Rattatouille - but I haven't seen those). Best Disney film for absolutely years however.

Star Trek - the new one, with the young crew: Star Trek 90210...

Oh my God! How good was that?! Thought I'd despise it, as I love the original series/movies (nothing after is ST for me, sorry Picard). It was sensational. If you've never seen ST before, you've got a hugely entertaining sci-fi flick on your hands... if you know your stuff (and I'm no anorak for it), you'll be grinning the whole way through.

The Sylar chap as Spock was quite uncanny, but thought Karl Urban as McCoy was right on the money. Effects were great, nice bit of comedy, Simon Pegg didn't fuck up Scotty... yeah, adored it.

The lights came up and my pal and I sat there with huge, stupid grins on our faces.

Go see. Now.

Transformers 2 - The first was fairly harmless, trashy but not too bad. The second is not anywhere near as good; the first half is a mixture of attempted sensory overload, Megan Fox not wearing much and pathetic humour.

The second half seems to remember that they have to get on with the 'plot' and as such does improve, despite some extremley irritating transformers (one even quoted Jar Jar Binks, and I'm sure that must have been deliberate). Also features several shots of baywatch style running (no bad thing), dreadful directing with things zoomed in so much that you have next to no idea of what is going on.

Megan Fox being filmed like she's auditioning for a softcore porn actress is not enough to spend money on watching this (wait for youtube), neither is the excessive action (badly done) or the pointless plot that is a repeat of the first film but with added dog humping scenes and more pointless swearing.

Still...love the voice on Optimus Prime. They should get him to replace David Attenborough when he retires.

The way it's done is what makes it excessive: the combination of 2 hours of extremely loud explosions combined with Bay's inability to zoom out far enough from the action to see what is supposed to be going on brings it too close to frying your brain.

There is one scene in a forest that is zoomed out enough for some fighting and it's miles better than any of the others.. It's more the terrible direction combined with a constant sound that pushes it too far. Bay really can't direct action very well which is odd given his career to date.

SPOILERS BLAH BLAH.

Terminator 4: Great action. Rest of it is utter shit though. Why protect Kyle Reese so desperately? If you already exist, then great, doesnt matter too much if he dies. Also, if he dies = no Terminator 1 = no Skynet. Everybody wins. Some of the fanservice was pretty cool though.

Transformers 2: Exactly what you want in a Transformers film. Prefered it to the first one, Megan Fox gets hotter, can actually see the action this time and the humour was surprisingly good. Oh and the gratuitous military hardware, in the words of Iceman: "this gives me a hardon".

The bad stuff = no dinobots, even though they could EASILY have been justifiably added. The robots have no distinctiveness but for Prime. Its not helped that because they're not the same colours/models as the old days, quite often you're thinking "who is that meant to be?". Jetfire was a great character, but not Jetfire and shouldnt have died. Ravage died. So thats Ravage, Jazz and Jetfire dead. Three of the best toys.

The Matrix

No idea why I fancied watching it again but it's weird, a film that seems to be in the line of fire for a fair bit of slating yet over ten years on it's still a damned good film for a bit of sunday afternoon's lazy father's day viewing.

Some of the effects have aged badly though (never noticed just how crappy the bit where the lift blows up in the lobby looked - now looks like someone's 1st year animation project!)

Otherwise though, makes me want to watch the sequels just to remind myself how fucked up the series ended up

Get Smart

Brilliant. Not particularly true to the original in that Smart is pretty handy but packed full of laugh out loud moments, smart background bits and slapstick thats the right side of Will Ferrell. And they even had an effects budget large enough to give Anne Hathaway a cleavage. My fave film I've seen this year by a mile :D

Wow, I've not disagreed that much about a film in ages. Thought Get Smart was absolute tosh, and I normally love Carell. Christ I even have a soft spot for The Rock!

Just couldn't wait for it to finish, and can't remember laughing once, which was a real shame :(

Each to their own though, especially when comedy is concerned.

My crappy twitter reviews for the stuff I watched this weekend:

RocknRolla - Guy RitchTea back on form. If you liked LS2SB and Snatch you'll like this. Gangsters, cups of tea, mix ups and swearing. 8/10

The Strangers - Tense, scary knocking at the door of an elven princess. Sackboy's dad and plenty of screaming. Let down by naff ending 7/10

I loved bits like him denting controls head, staring/not staring at 99's bottom as she crawled under the laser beams, getting stuck with the cross bow penknife in the airliner toilet, the bead curtain in the mansion, etc etc.

It was brilliant and you must have been having an off day when you watched it :D

I thought it was only the sequels that got a slating.

I've been waiting for the non-boxset blu-ray for just the first film for a while now because I really don't want to see the others again. Last time it was like watching The Phantom Menace straight after the original Star Wars trilogy.

This was exactly my gripe with the first film, I just didn't think it was that great an action film because sheer number of explosions and things flying about isn't the one and only measure of an exciting action scene. If you can't tell what's going on you lose interest, and that happened a lot for me with the first film. It's kinda similar to the design of the Transformers themselves - they seem to be under the impression that having billions of shiny spinning bits all over them is a decent substitute for having halfway decent design of the characters. It isn't, and I still think most of them look a bit crap.

To be fair I never expected the sequel to be much cop, I'm constantly baffled that people even seem to give it as much credit as they do though.

Babel - Very good movie. Loved the fact that they didn't all speak English for some miraculous reason like they do in all other films and weren't subtitled either.

-SPOILER-

Did anyone understand the Japanese storyline?
I didn't really understand the role of the girl, except that she was the daughter of the guy who left his gun in Morocco after the hunting trip and that she probably was a bit depressed, because she couldn't hear anything nor talk to anyone.

Well, with the exception of the Forest Battle, that was great, I really thought that the movie was really bland.

Fart and nuts jokes, 2 Autobot pimps, Ravage being wasted in such a shitty way, the embrionics shit...

The really important Decpticon dwarf that just disappeared from the movie at a certain point...

Devastator was wasted with a single shot, such an huge mofo killed like that?!

God I was so disappointed after the great first one... ;_;

Ghostbusters. I fell asleep halfway through but not because of the film. It's very good for a comedy film, despite not getting that many laughs.

Plot is alright, performances vary between wooden and very good (Murray and fat guy), Weaver as the evil person is incredibly beautiful.

Special effects are just about alright, even though the stop motion stuff is a bit ropey in places.

Not as great as 25 years of hype would give it but good.

Gran Torino. Brilliant if a little close to the bone regaring mortality etc. Clint is excellent after the first 20 minutes where he does littl but growl. Direction is great as always, car is beautiful, story is very good with a good ending.

I wish Clint has another 50 years in him :(
