Pirates of the Caribbean 2

What a load of rubbish. Far too much focus on monsters. A far cry from the first one.

3/10

Keira Knightly is rather pleasing to the eye, though. ^.^

papa rabbit said:Ah - it appears that 20th Century Fox have taken over distribution for the franchise. Dawn Treader is supposedly to start filming this May for release in December 2010.

Dawn Treader creeped me out most as a kid - way too much stillness and emptiness.

Also, only now, looking at the title an older-than-a-kid, do I realise that Treader is actually a proper word :s

Yeah, utter rubbish, innit?

Not really a film but I watched a Blu-Ray copy of Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo" on the projector. Absolutely gobsmacking stuff from start to finish

No Country For Old Men: 7/10

Powerful acting, great performance from that Spanish actor who I can't remember the name of, and the petrol station scene was utterly brilliant.

That said, I had a LOT of difficulty hearing them, so I need to watch it again and pick up on bits I missed.

Gone in 60 Seconds

WTF was that garbage? Contrived gunfight at the end, forced sibling tension that's resolved by a simple explanation, Nic Cage trying to romanticise cars, Angelina Jolie looking like she crawled out of a trash can, completely missing out on pop culture (then again, it was made in 2000), black humour that was probably written by really white people, clichéd cops, clichéd "guy coming out of retirement for one last shot" plot gimmick, terrible soundtrack, and dodgy cinematography.

Gone in 60 Seconds? More like Gone in 60 This Move Is Really Sucky, am I right?!

Saw Ghost Town last night, Ricky Gervais plays a misanthrope really well. Rather funny and only a bit too sentimental towards the end but at least why it happens makes sense. Well worth a watch 7.5/10

Took the kids to see Bolt yesterday at Nottingham Broadway.

Must admit I quite enjoyed the opening sequence and the hand of Lasseter can be seen in the production though it still lacks a little of Pixar's ddelicate touch, playing a rather more straight 'kiddy-flick' hand.

6/10.

Waltz with Bashir -Very good but not quite as good as I was expecting. Still, nice art style and a very important/interesting subject.

Transsiberian - From the same guy that did The Machinist, it's one of the best films I've seen in weeks. Nothing is predictable, keeping you slightly on edge for a lot of the film - you knowsomething is not quite right but there's no real clue what.

This is how you do films with twists - you don't just have one point where it all changes.

Fistful of Dollars - Excellent film, really enjoyed it but it's hard to see anything even similar being made these days.

For a few dollars more - not quite as good as 'Fistful' but still good. Clint was a bit more talky and the plot was a little more aimless but the class still shone through.

Dirty Harry - Never seen this before (same for the above), only the last few minutes of it but I didn't know which of the Harry films it was. extremely good and shows some of the modern crime films to be just as bad and lazy as I thought they were. With what is essentially a 2D character, just a few lines and comments thrown in managed to give a subtle depth beyond it being a guy that walks around shooting bad guys.

PS. Clint is awesome.

Ghost Rider.

Picked this up cheap on Blu-ray and have to say I really enjoyed it. I didn't know anything about the character but the film does a good job of explaining things without getting in the way of the action.

The special effects are spot on and look great in HD. I'd love to see them do a prequel based on Sam Elliot's cowboy ghost rider.

Let The Right One In. Very odd little movie, which has more than an air of Lost in Translation about it. I didn't entirely dislike it and it did have a few interesting scenes but I don't know if I can recommend it to others. Certainly didn't strike me as being worthy of all the 5 star reviews I've seen

Hanzo The Razor trilogy - 7/10
Maybe an 8, i love it but it's crazy and 0_o at times. Quite often in fact.

Resident Evil 2 - 7/10
Really well done cheese. Not as good as the first i don't think but my housemate wanted to watch it as he'd been told ages ago that it was rubbish.
He liked it too and i've got to dig out my Extinction DVD to watch next week.

Crank - 9/10

I think I remember Whizzo recommending this ages ago, saying it was "like GTA the movie" and he's not wrong. Loved every shallow no-brain action fuelled minute of it, specially the sex scene bit :)

I seem to be mutating into Mr Shallow when it comes to films lately. This and Fast & Furious ftw!

The Happening 5/10

Worst movie by M. Night Shyamalan yet... I really loved The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable (felt that The Village was quite good), and that Signs was a bit shit... But this one is just shit... I just could care less about the main characters (to tell the truth I wanted that they die and horrible painfull death).

I was hopping for something better... :(

RUN.RUN FROM THE WIND.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - Brilliant, despite meandering quite a lot and could easily have edited out about an hour of it. Still really enjoyed it though.

State of Play with Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck.

Fun little thriller with some nice twists in it. Very classy production. Perhaps went a bit long, and the final twist felt like a rush-job. Likeable, though. Helen Mirren was very good in it.

Righteous Kill 8.5/10

Great movie, Al Pacino and De Niro in very good shape (unlike some of the more recent shit by De Niro) if Michael Mann directed this one it could have been much better, almost a new Heat IMHO...

All of M. Night Shammalammadingdongs films feel like episodes of the Outer Limits that someone decided to stretch to feature length, without putting any extra content in. Not one of them has anywhere near enough incident or plot development to merit a full length movie.

He gets a nice turn out of the players, but good casting does most of the work for him there.

o_O

I shudder to think what you would want to edit out of one the greatest films of all time!

Since you enjoyed the 'Dollars Trilogy' Micro, I would recommend you watch Once Upon A Time In The West. It is another great Leone western starring Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, Charles Bronsan and Claudia Cardinale.

Body of Lies - a decent political thriller of sorts with Russell Crowe and Leo DiCaprio focused on the 'war on terror' but done a lot better than most of the rest. There are clear bad guys, and then the rest that hover between doing the right thing but not necessarily the right way.

I was expecting an attempt at a big twist where someone like Crowe was manipulating everything and was really a bad guy. I was more than happy that they went with something more intelligent than that.

Magnum Force - Not quite as good as Dirty Harry and it was fairly obvious who was behind the killings from very early on but the performances, direction and script carry it well. Harry is clearly supposed to be a little bit 'nicer' than before and it definitely adds a bit more depth to the character.

/looks through thread.

Fuck me, I watch a lot of films :P

Just back from a matinee performance of...Crank:High Voltage!

It's even more daft and possibly even more GTA, inappropriate parenting when it comes to violent video games even crops up at one point!

Hmmm definitely going to have to see that. Love the way it seems to pick up directly from the first film.

This and Transporter 3 should satisfy my junk movie craving quite nicely.

Watched the Dutchess on Saturday night. I suppose the best port of comparison would be Marie Antoinette, and it wasn't as good as that by a country mile.

No wonder Fiennes got a mistress, his missus looked like a 12 year old boy...
