The Mist.

Spoilers below so stop if you've not seen it.

*********************************************

I personally thought this was a sub par cliché ridden mess.

*the CGI tentacles were poor,
*the religious nutjob was poorly realised, it went from people laughing at her to human sacrifice in under a day (of movie time)
*the attacks were in a sequence of "scary thing, pause new scary thing", which is a bit silly- you would have thought the smaller/faster creatures would have reached them first too.
*the ending was illogical- why shoot everyone until you had to? And obviously as soon as he'd shot his little boy, he was bound to be rescued.

So did the missus and mate, which was baffling.

Next time on Monday film club, I'm gonna make them watch Melissa George in the remake of Amnityville :D

Clone Wars - it's rubbish, completely and utterly shit.

Rescuing a kidnapped, baby Hutt to do a deal with a crimelord isn't something Star Wars is about to me and slapstick droid soldiers are garbage. Avoid.

So, the Oscars were a bit gay. Gayer than usual, I mean.

I didn't think much of the film but the TV series is good.

I watched the first episode of The Wire last night and it's seems to be rather good.

To be fair to the film, that day of movie time was *kind of* the apocalypse - and they were experiencing the apocalypse in Walmart.

I'd say they are two variables that may validly affect predictable behaviour patterns ;-)

I finished the first series of The Wire. Has to be one of the best TV series I've seen. I hope the second series is just as good.

I think they get better. The fourth was my favourite.

Edit: heh, just noticed I've said that above too :P

Independance day (blu ray) - The special effects look incredibly ropey now and it's a surprise more wasn't made of that at the time, the funny bits aren't that funny and yet it's still one of the best of this kind of disaster movies that I've seen. Bill Pullman's speech still sends shivers down my spine, even if it is one of those obvious American flag waving types of moments.

Persepolis - very, very good and manages to express what being an Iranian woman was like in the 80s-90s. It's effectively an entertaining version of a documentary from a human perspective and deserves all the acclaim it has received.

Vantage Point Typical summer blockbuster I would say. That is not to say it was bad, it was actually quite entertaining and a lovely colour scheme i.e. bright and vibrant.

Zack and Miri - one of Kevin Smith's worst. And I say that as a fan. He's taking a break from writing his own films now though, and views this as the last of his puerile flicks, so hopefully he'll get back on form in some way

I loved Zack and Miri. I thought it was very charming and while it had its peurile moments it was still more intelligently written than 90% of the crap out there.

So, what's a good romantic movie that's entertaining enough for a bloke to sit through too... playing at the cinema at the moment? Got a follow up date, and I'm picking the film.

No, I haven't seen Watchmen yet, but this may not be the best time...

New in Town - Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr(sposed to be shit but it is a girly film).

Twilight if it's a 12 year old girl

Duplicity if romantic includes guns (and Julia Roberts)

Curious Case of Benjamin Button, if you're happy to be slightly bored.

Other than that, not much - bad time of the year. How about a good one on DVD?

Slim pickings, but I reckon this could be the winner. Directed by Alex Proyas - so I need to see it, at least.

Really want to get along and see Watchmen, but doubt it's a date movie for someone who isn't familiar with the source material.

The Knowing has been getting generally poor to abysmal reviews, many mentioning that they liked a lot of his other work but that this is a bit of a confused mess.

Still, it's probably better than most of the stuff out now.

From the trailer it looks like a cross between Pi, Nicolas Cage, and lots of money.

Watched Ironman and Prince Caspian on iTunes recently.

Iron man was good fun but I felt a bit fatigued with the same old super hero formula.

I really like the Narnia films, is it true they aren't making any more?

Yeah bloody shame really as I quite liked both the Narnia films. Any excuse to ogle huge tracts of NZ.

Dunno. Maybe the kids were just getting too old or something, or they ran out of money.

A pity, because there's still plenty of stuff from the books they could've made into superb filmage.

Ah - it appears that 20th Century Fox have taken over distribution for the franchise. Dawn Treader is supposedly to start filming this May for release in December 2010.

Watchmen... Really bad choice for a date movie. :/

Good film though. The lady will be picking next time. I've been told.
