I assume we are referring to the original film by the way, not to year 2000 travesty?

The 2000 movie is still worth it for the music bits, and the ludicrous car pile-up. Just FFWD through all the other bits.

Still think HB2 pales in comparison to the original.

whereas i enjoyed the original but thought the sequel was far better.

Wanted on BRD. Pretty decent thriller, but lapsed into standard thriller-esque stuff halfway through. The humour and sharpness (more evedent at the start) is what sets it apart.

I want to see this but I really really really think it'd make me angry and wish they'd stuck to the Graphic Novel idea instead of what they ended up doing...

mal said:The Eye (2002) - About a woman who receives a cornea transplant and starts seeing strange things. In Cantonese.

Sadly, I can't find anything about this film to recommend. I'm used to female leads in east-Asian horror films being ineffectual scaredycats, but this one was truly pathetic and irritating. Perhaps that's why I didn't find any of the encounters at all scary, or perhaps it's because it's established fairly early on that there's no actual danger in anything that's happening.

The plot otherwise proceeded very slowly and pretty predictably. The dialogue, what little there is of it is awful, and someone needs to keep the composer of the film away from the synthesiser shop - I know we may be looking at someone playing the violin, but I know what a synthesiser sounds like.

On a positive note, some of the visual effects were inoffensive. But I'm totally at a loss to what anyone can really enjoy about watching this film.

Mal, you need to get out of this thread and never come back.

You can pick up your shit in the driveway.

Sorry, rmj! I'm honestly at a loss to understand what people like about the film though. And I usually agree with your judgement on films if I remember rightly.

Cleared a bunch of stuff off the PVR at chrimbo and watched Renaissance. Some weird animated B / W film I'd totally forgotten I'd recorded. Was actually really neatly done but the story was a bit cliche and boring. Great visuals though - bit like a cinematic version of Sega's upcoming MadWorld

/also loved The Eye. It tails off toward the end, sure, but the hospital scene is terrifying, especially for a glasses wearer - they got the effect of being short-sighted absolutely spot-on

I'll give you 'you're in my seat'. My heart rate did jump at that point.

Maybe I'm just desensitised to this sort of thing now. I didn't get anything from the hospital scene, though I could see what they were trying to do. I think the 'scary' sound effects being too loud and bombastic probably didn't help either. It's the soundtrack in horror films that usually shits me up, I reckon - I just didn't find this one at all eerie personally.

It's the little details that do it for me. The ghostly face that appears in the train window, during that long shot... that isn't spotted by the characters or alluded to anywhere else. Nice touch - and one that a lot of people miss on a first viewing. Loved the reveal with the photo, too, although that was easy enough to see coming.

Slumdog Millionaire

You'll have to suspend your disbelief a little (it's pretty much a fairy tale) but as a love story it is amazing. Gorgeous looking, too.

Can't believe people walked off during the credits sequence - that was the best part. :D

Loved it, want to see it again ;_;

Iron Man (Blu Ray) - enjoyed it, but I enjoyed it more the first time I saw it. The opposite effect to rewatching The Dark Knight. In fact, I'm now happy to say TDK was the better movie. By some way.

In Bruges - fucking hell! This is a weird one. It's pitch black comedy, veers into tragedy, but is actually a rather clever and tidy little script. Laughed out loud at several moments, but other people I know have hated it. Ralph Fiennes has never been better as Harry - a comically raging psychopath. Recommended.

You'll enjoy season 3 even more than that. I thought S2 started off a bit slow but did get very good halfway through, S3 is excellent from the first episode.

That's good news. I agree the 2nd season - it was a bit slow to get off the ground, but turned into an absolute corker.

It's the sort of show I'd love to continue for loads of seasons, but I can't imagine who they'd keep it fresh.

Bender's Game. The first of the Futurama "films" I've decided to try.

They should have left it buried. Simply fucking *awful* and a huge blot on the otherwise wondrous World of Tomorrow ;_;

Just watched Milk.

It was totally gay.

With that out of the way, I really enjoyed it. It was a bit slow getting to the more dramatic stuff (and yet the early stuff felt a bit rushed), but once it got going, it was gripping stuff. Thankfully they cut just short of melodrama and kept things realistic and made the character of Harvey Milk seem human and imperfect.

By the final scene, it was really moving (the candlelight vigil, OMG ;_; ). And it just felt as though I were watching something incredibly important. Like, this shizzle could bring peace to the middle east.

Ten aces.

I didn't realise that was even out this week.

The Godfather (blu ray) - Still excellent although I would've preferred it if the editing was just a little bit tighter but it's hard to complain. After watching the entire 4th and 5th series of The Wire, back-to-back, it still felt a little...light somehow. The blu ray picture is a little better than before, especially on a large screen but the surround sound is virtually unchanged from any of the previous versions.

Incidentally, The Wire is the greatest TV show I've ever seen. It manages to feel like it's real - politicians that get your hopes up before the expected happens, broken dreams and the inevitability of everything. The final few episodes are the best ending of any series I've seen too - not sentimental in any way, leaves you satisfied despite it ending and doesn't break the tone or story of anything that's gone before.

The Thing (Blu Ray) - 10/10

Stunning transfer (99% of the time) which is amazing considering the film was made in '82.

I was about thirteen when I first saw this, and it fucked me up for months. I must have watched this film more than any other over the years and it just doesn't age. One of the few things I knew I had to buy on Blu Ray (I've now bought the damn thing four times). A full on masterpiece.

Can you buy Jaws on blu ray yet?

Jaws... guess I saw it on it's first TV showing so I must have been around 10/11!

Unfortunate skinny dipper at beginning... OK, but left a feeling of unease (still there to this day) when open-sea swimming.

Corpse popping out of submerged boat... kind of expected that.

Blood coming out of Quint's mouth when stupid, robotic shark is chomping on his guts? THAT freaked me out loads.

I know I was young (too young) and impressionable but it was probably the most upsetting thing I've seen in a movie. However, I've still not had the pleasure of watching Mamma Mia so that may well change.

Godfather part 2 - Obviously it's very good, although I found less of the performances grabbed me than those in Godfather part 1. Unfortunately Pacino has been putting in that performance for the last 30 years which makes it feel slightly less impressive than it would've otherwise been.

His brother was easily the best performer on screen. Sad that he died days after finishing the Deer Hunter.

Godfather part 3 - not dreadful but it just felt utterly pointless. It didn't move the plot on any more than it could've in an edited 30 minutes. Sofia Coppola is more wooden than Keanu Reeves has ever managed.
