The Mist - very capable thriller/horror with an INCREDIBLE ending :-D

Agreed, loved that ending.

It was almost a Family Guy ending ;-)

Is it out to buy in the UK yet? I'm really keen to see it, but my multi-region player isn't linked to the 5.1.

Rather see and hear it in all it's glory. heard very good things about it, though.

Unless there's a region free blu ray anywhere?

Yeah, my copy's on order. Want to see it before Quarantine

Don't see the trailer for Quarantine... it has spoilers in it apparently. :(

No, not yet. There is a very good DIVX knocking around though

Abolutely brilliant, watch it now.

It may be a 'toon, but it's the best superman you'll see...

supes even vomits blood after a gut punch. eep!

watched the first half of this on the train to work this morning. second half coming up soon.

kevin smith's cameo made me giggle :) it was worth watching entirely for that imho.

Made a start on rewatching Reanimator last night. As amusing as I remembered, except everyone looks a lot younger.

Terribly paced? It's only seventy-five minutes long, man! And, yeah, you kinda knew where the big scares were coming, but they still had impact.

Now Cloverfield, for a supposedly similar experience, is terribly paced... May be the worst opening to a film I've seen in years.

75 minutes long but everything was in the wrong place. The last scene was great but the rest was just appalling.

Apart from a couple of dodgy scenes, I much preferred Clovefield, although Blair Witch is still my fave "home movie" horror film

Superman Doomsday - 8/10 very, very good indeed.

Vexille 7 or 8/10 depending on how much of a mood i'm in. Very well done CGI anime film. Story is nothing astounding but it's enjoyable and i think play have a deal on at the moment.

Hellboy 2, at my good mate Dave Internet's home theatre.

*ahem*

8/10. Really rather good and Mrs Retroid enjoyed it a lot too! \o/

One I'll have to pick up on Blu Ray. The troll market sequence especially looked like it'd have a load of cool detail going on.

Try this. Watched it recently and it was a nicely understated Japanese horror.

Looks good. Is it torrentable? I can't see it on DVD at Lovefilm

I don't know of a DVD release... it's torrentable, the one we watched was a two CD jobbie.

It's one I'd be happy to import if I saw a copy around at a sane price :)

The Orphanage - 90%

Not the scarefest that has been suggested, but something more meditative, in line with Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone. Actually reminded me of The Changeling more than anything - which is probably the highest praise I can give it.

Enjoyed Hot Fuzz far more on a second watch... lowered expectations, I guess. Not that I don't rate it, but SotD really raised the bar in what I could expect.

Love Tim Dalton in this too. :)

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly -

Great movie that everyone should see. A western with Clint Eastwood and some other good actors and great music by the legendary Ennio Morricone. Once Upon A Time In the West is also superb but this is the better film.

Hot Fuzz really isn't a very good film, solid but nowhere near as good as SoTD.

You'll get to grips with my reviewing style soon enough ;-)

I'd heard about the behind-the-scenes work within Blair Witch without getting caught up in the hype so managed to genuinely enjoy it and I still like to watch it now and again.

Cloverfield was more of a big-bucks event - same sort of film as Blair Witch, just taken to extremes. It had many many flaws but my love of disaster films/scenarios let me see past them.

Rec just seemed... forced? Seems a funny thing to say when it's so blatantly not, but it seemed like it was trying a little too hard. I still maintain that the pacing was all to pot and some of the bad guys were comical in their stances and timing. The final stair chase was a perfect example - the camera pokes over the banister to find pretty much every baddie also leaning over the banister, snarling at the camera for effect. The very last sequence was great but nothing that hadn't been done better in quite a few other films. On the whole I really did think it was below average.

Anyway, watched R-Point tonight. Seemed like a nice idea but on the whole it came across a little too confused. 4/10

I liked Shaun first time, but not so much on repeat viewings, and didn't like Hot Fuzz at first, but am finding more in it on repeat viewings.

I also liked R-Point... but you're right, it's not quite as tight as it should be.

Brownie point for anyone that can tell me the name of that team's new film... heard good things... and forgotten the bloody name of it!

Ju-on The Grudge 2. Liked the way the different stories merged but the shocks weren't shocking enough and they seem to have lost the skill of building up any sort of suspense. It set out trying to feel like Ring but ended up feeling a bit more like I Know What You Did Last Summer

4/10

I thought Hot Fuzz was a little dull for the first two-thirds of the movie... before coming alive in the last half-hour.

SotD I saw after, and I absolutely loved it.

Double Bill of Dark Knight and Hellboy 2.

TDK: Nothing new to add, excellent film, Heath was awesome, last 10 minutes badly written and unnecessary, 2nd best film of the year.

Hellboy 2: Fun, not as good as 1. Bit too much comic relief, not enough story, Selma Blair was hot. If you haven't seen it yet, wait for the dvd to come out.

Is that the first time you've seen it Kay ? This is exactly the same impression I had of it the first time I saw it, but wierdly the first 2/3rds has grown on me in subsequent viewings.

V for Vendetta.

I saw it for the first time a year or so ago and I really liked it then, since then I've read the comic of it. It's hard to like it now because they've changed so much that was good about the comic and usually for no apparent reason while forgetting the point of it for the first half of the film.

I can see why Alan Moore didn't like it (other than him being a miserable bastard).
