Brave 10/10

Great stuff again from Pixar. Probably their most "Disney" film to date though - if that makes any sense to any one.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 8/10

Very late watching this series but enjoying it more than I probably should. Goblet of Fire was probably the worst of the films for me so far (found the Triwizard Tournament to be a bit meh) it was still a good bit of light hearted fun.

While some of the animation is a bit basic (especially the opening car race) and it lacks some of the visual grittiness of Miller's original artwork, it's otherwise very faithful; the character designs and even some of the shot framings are taken straight from the source material (like this). Absolutely and utterly recommended.

(This and Dredd in the same month; comic book adaptation heaven!)

Seriously do want that. One of my favourite graphic novels of all time. Really wish someone had the balls to make the next bat 'trilogy' with an old fart Bruce Wayne like that (oh and bring him in kicking superman's arse)

dredd the clearly more enjoyable time spent. Kind of wish I hadn't bought prometheus, I wasn't really expecting something quite as predictable as that.

I sat through Prometheus again recently too. Bloody awful, a rare film that actually gets WORSE the more you watch it. Only thing I liked in it was Charlize Theron's arse.

Michael Fassbender is supposedly incredible in it too? Haven't seen it yet, was actually quite excited about it until I read this thread!

Going to revisit the earlier Alien films first I think

I think the only reason fassbender stands out for some is because he's MEANT to be playing a robot, while all the other actors are merely acting like robots.

The Expendables 2.

First scene was great, then it went to double-face-palming cringing for a good part of the running time.

I get that they wanted to have more stars in there, but a monkey could have incorporated them better. As it was, there was some magical beefcake gps that allowed a cameo deus ex machina to come in, say a few lines then promptly piss off again.

And the lines... my god, talk about cringeworthy. Arnie and Willis got theirs off, and it was not cool at all. I wonder how I ever thought this could be a great idea.

Quite. For Noomi Rapace's Hollywood 'debut' I bet she's wishing she'd stayed as a bit part TV actor on swedish tv movies. Poor gal.

Prometheus was a bit mehhhhhh, but a sequel could be great.

A real sci-fi 2000ad thing. They'll never make it like that though :C

I saw this at the cinema and enjoyed every minute of it. I was laughing all the way through. Loved it.

Watched it recently at home and it didn't have anywhere near the same impact. Was a shame as I was promising wifey that it was no where near as rubbish as the first film, but actually on second viewing it's actually just "a bit better than the first film".

Thinking about it, the only thing I've enjoyed in either Expendables movie is Terry Crews.

Separately, I like everyone and their "solo" stuff. Together, it's like a fucking Eagles reunion tour.

Berberian Sound Stage.

Fucking rubbish.

I now await film school types to explain to me why I'm wrong, but watching the extras it's apparent that the director and producer don't have a fucking clue what it's about either.

BTW the disk turned up safely (we've had a batch of stuff stolen AGAIN thanks to our fucknutted postie leaving stuff half hanging out of the letterbox) - very much appreciated dude and it's as good as you said it was. The fight with Superman was bloody awesome.

Dredd. 7/10

Bearing in mind I saw The Raid first (and that's a far more spectacular film), this probably was never going to be quite as good as I hoped. I like it - and think Urban was great in the role - but the city and too many visual references ground it in the modern day, which means that the comic book references that I really love seem more incongruous than the setting that they really should be. Sure, done on a budget, and I'd like to see this as the start of a franchise... but I just wanted it to be perfect. And it isn't.

Looper. 9/10

Sci-Fi done right. Willis is looking his age, but bringing all the things I love him for; JGL is always fantastic - and his mannerisms, etc, do a far better job of selling him as the younger version of Willis than the slightly dodgy prosthetics. Emily Blunt is typically gorgeous and the story was excellent. Even my sci-fi hating better half really enjoyed it.

Thank god, another person who thought Dredd was like The Raid, only less exciting. I've talked with friends who loved Dredd. I swear they must have seen a different movie to me.

I was a bit disappointed with much of the 'contemporary' grounding (vehicles in particular) but I guess when you consider what was knocking around in 2000, a clapped out old VW bus would be about right :)

Seriously though, this movie with a more city-wide setting, and some of the visual stuff from the old Dredd movie (H wagons, big mental-looking cityblocks, robot tech) would've been perfecto. Still love it though even as it is. Considering the budget it really did a good job of selling Urban to me as Dredd.

Pontypool. 8/10

(It's on Netflix)

I *think* someone made a zombie movie with a real sense of originality (although this isn't really a zombie movie). A beleagured radio station starts reporting on some very strange events in a small Canadian town. Had a real War of the Worlds radio play vibe... and a little very dark humour.

Odd, but well worth a watch.

Recently watched the Raid, didn't really like it I'm afraid, it was too one note, too grey and once you have seen one fight you have seen them all, preferred Dredd to this for my trapped-in-a-building needs, it had more character, personality and was better paced.

The Bourne Legacy. 3/10

Those infinite number of monkeys that are supposed to knock out the works of Shakespeare? Ten of them took a cigarette break and wrote the script for this shit.

If you got through the first hour without thinking "The fuck?" you're a better man than I. I had to wait ninety minutes for one gimp to get karate-chopped in the throat. Matt Damon would have sorted this shit out in fifteen minutes flat.

Dredd.

Right, erm... without wanting to upset anyone here I have to say I'm not sure I get what all the gushing was about. I mean it was good. It was no Robocop, but it was alright.

Agreed with a comment elsewhere in the thread - The Raid is a much better "stuck in a building" movie.

So yeah, it was fine.

The thing about Dredd is this. It was so nicely made considering how much it cost, and felt a lot like an ad from the makers saying "Look, this is what we can do for X amount of cash. Give us XXXXX amount of cash and we can make a Dredd film that will blow your bollocks off"

And I believe they can. I seriously hope that there's a second film somewhere in the pipeline, retaining Urban as Dredd, and going out into Mega City 1 to play rather than being stuck in a city block. There's so much potential in the comics to draw out a tight screenplay so I hope the next cinematic version of Dredd we see isn't a return back to the first movie, where a big budget was spunked away on a flick that felt like a parody. A very glossy and nice looking parody but still a parody.

Martha Marcy May Marlene. 4/10

Yeah, I'll get stick for this but we found it mind-numbingly tedious. Was ready to turn it off after less than an hour but we thought something resembling a point might materialise. By the end of the film (yeah, some ending, cheers), I felt like I'd been through a week of sleep-deprivation and brain-washing.

And I quite like Olsen as an actress.

Typical Burton/Depp stuff but had a lot to like. Felt a lot like a cross between Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissor Hands.

I've just watched it for the first time on Blu-ray. Superb film and up there with the best the Bond series has to offer. Still don't think much of the theme tune though despite all the accolades it has earned. Dull as ditch-water delivery from Adele. Bring back Shirley Bassey ;-)
