Just back from seeing Seven Psychopaths.

It's been years since I've considered a film to be just about perfect. Loved it.

Bluray binge today. Ted, which is about as funny as Family Guy, make of that what you will. I thought it okay.

Also bought Cabin in the Woods, which was really good. Funny, gory (not too gory), and no shaky cam footage.

Just watched The Dark Knight Rises.

Didn't deserve the slating it got, had some wobbly moments and probably a good half hour of boredom that could've been trimmed but it was pretty good nonetheless.

Worth it for the scarab and Anne Hathaway's fantastic arse alone.

Great cheesy ending too! It's a damned shame Nolan will never do any more, which makes me wonder who could step up and make anything better than his efforts with the franchise. Only person I can think of is Fincher and he's put out some pretty dud stuff lately.

There Will Be Blood.

Working my way through Total Films 50 top films released since the magazine launched. Seen a lot of them, just filling in the gaps. Daniel Day Lewis is IMMENSE in this, what a performance. Visually a lot in common with the Coen Bros? Top film about oil prospecting, family, greed and religious nutters.

The Expendables.

Never watched it when it was first out, watched it when it showed on Ch5 last night. Bit disappointed really. WAY way too much chat in it, not enough evisceration!

Great cast though but people tell me the sequel's better. Zat right?

The Expendables tried to be a riff on 80's action movies without being as much fun as an 80's action movie. Dunno how they managed that :/

I loved Ted but have never seen FG. Maybe I should do something about that.

Hah perhaps they didn't make it homoerotic enough :)

It just seemed to trade all the usual action movie ridiculous plots, ridiculous villains and action set pieces for a whole lot of...well..nothing really. Did enjoy the bit in the church though, but sheesh Stallone seems to have been the only one of the 80s action stars to have weathered vaguely OK and even he's beginning to look a lot like his mum.

Ahem. Bit of a boast this, but I was lucky enough to get a ticket to go and see the premiere of The Snowman and The Snowdog yesterday (having worked on the companion app). It really is excellent, and highly recommended for parents and nostalgia fans. The UK TV premiere is on Channel 4, Christmas Eve at 8pm.

I was there too, it was very good. My kids are obsessed with the little snowdog plush toy they gave away in the gift bags!

You lucky lucky buggers! We will be all over this when it comes out (but the song that plays over the flying sequence isn't anywhere near a patch on the original Snowman, natch!)

Saw a preview in a paper on saturday and it does sound like it nods nicely to the original though.

BTW we dropped an article and some coverage onto ReadItDaddy for the app. Got a lot of people very excited on Twitter this morning!

Ah yes, it is rather cool - we've already given one away to my niece, tempted to keep the other but I think I should probably give it to someone who is actually, y'know, a kid. :)

Will check out the article Peej!

We'll probably do a proper review once my daughter's had a look at the app. Was totting up our review numbers earlier as I'm sticking together a 'yearly roundup' article for the blog. How in the hell did I review 69 kids books in November? HOW?!

Looking forward to the Snowman sequel, but not looking forward to the inevitable tears.

Hell, just thinking about The Snowman is almost enough to make me cry.

If anything this one might be even more of a tear-jerker than the original. It's good though - from an adult perspective I can appreciate that it's quite good to present kids with a film that doesn't just make them think that everything always has a happy ending, and that nothing lasts forever. Not that this exactly helps to console a sobbing child, I realise.

It's pretty much a live action Family Guy film, which is fine with me.

One of my younger colleagues wasn't too impressed with it, I asked him if he'd seen Flash Gordon and he hadn't.

I'd say that was pretty much a pre-requisite to enjoying the film!

Ha ha yeah! I said that as soon as I saw it. If you love Flash Gordon it's brilliant, if you haven't or don't like it, you'll hate Ted.

Thanks for the warning Neo, I'm so not watching Snowdog with beers in me, there would be rivers of tears.

We took a look at the app. My daughter absolutely LOVED it, nice and easy to use and looks bloody fantastic on the iPad as you whizz about. Very cool.

Great, I played the game with my niece at the weekend but as she hasn't ever played a touch-based game before (my sister and brother in law aren't really into their tech at all) she was a bit unsure of what to do. Seemed to enjoy watching it all the same though!

Also, a nice interview with Raymond Briggs about the film: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/news/raymond-briggs-the-snowman-is-not-really-about-christmas-its-about-death-8399520.html

It was quite something watching my daughter's reaction to the original Snowman. When it ends, she just looked at the TV then at me and said 'Does he come back?' and (stupidly) at the time I said "No he doesn't, but the boy can make another snowman any time"

This year she's going to look at me and say "You said he doesn't come back, yet there he is!" so that's going to take some explaining :)

She's read quite a few books this year that deal with bereavement and loss (children's books seem to have a real 'thing' about it at the moment) so hopefully she'll be better equipped to read between the lines. Ultimately though I know she's going to be a metric ton more sad about the dog melting than the snowman!

Screw every other summer blockbuster movie trailer. This takes a giant mecha monster-sized dump on the whole lot of them

Just listen out for the mecha AI voice :)

How to Train Your Dragon

Excellent flying sequences and training sequences. Hiccup is an adorable relatable main character and Toothless is an amazing beast, both fearsome and cute all at once.

But the film needed to be 30-60mins longer, to help develop the "main boss" as a dragon that actually needs defeating (I must have missed the bit where they even established why that dragon needed to be killed) and to give the main female more time to switch from tough-headed-wannabe-warrior to dragon-lover.

It was all a bit rushed. Which is a shame, because the characters and voice acting and visuals were all good - there just wasn't enough time to do the plot properly.

It was okay, apart from the pointless bit of self sacrifice at the end, which made little or no sense. Also: no panic room?

Bill, there's a better alternate ending to this, slightly more in line with the book, it should be on youtube...

NOOOOOOOO!

It takes all the best stuff from '80's action films and throws it all away, leaving an empty husk of a film. I know cliche and badness can make a film good, but not here. All the creativity went into the first action sequence, which also has an excellent Jet Li pan-fighting sequence. After that, it's just tumbleweed with guns. I didn't make it to the end, switching off with about 10-15 minutes to go and sending it back to Lovefilm.

I preferred the A-Team to either of these films.

THE RAID

I'd expected guns and chop-socky, but I hadn't expected tension, good pacing, a good story and acting. Full of unexpected stuff. And guns and chop-socky. Great film.
