Went to see TDKR tonight, which as expected was great, but was quite shocked to see the trailer for Gangster Squad before it.

Basically the trailer showed 4 gangsters hiding behind a cinema screen before blasting their way through it to the audience.

That trailer was removed in the US, as it happens.

Expendables 2

Absolutely fucking fan bloody tastic.
It's silly. REALLY silly. It's stupid. REALLY stupid. But my goodness I enjoyed every second of this. The action was fairly unrelenting, the gags were cheesy as a house made from edam, and the self referencing really floated my boat.

If you never enjoyed Arnie/Sly/Willis films of years gone by, then you will undoubtedly hate this movie. If you watched those on VHS over and over and over then you'll love it.

I'm quite sure it'll be a critical flop. It has no redeeming value other than pure fan service and I don't know how it will play to anyone outside of the 30-45 bracket. I think I had more fun from this than I did from Avengers and Batman combined. Seriously. (I am a little bit ashamed to say that).

To be honest the first one is ok, but don't go out of your way for it. This one is better in every regard.

Saw the first one and thought every Jason Statham film from the last ten years achieved what it set out to achieve ten times over.

Glad to hear the second one is better though :D

I'm not a big fan of Statham, but his character certainly got some of the better lines in this one. My favourite being "He's slightly gigantic"

Watched JCVD again last night. Really can't get over how good a film it is. Van Damme is a revelation.

Yes I know.

But watch it, then tell me different.

JCVD is fantastic. THAT scene with the floaty chair...

JCVD as a bad guy in this new film though. Aww man, he should have done more bad guy roles in the 90's. He was quality :D

Read the Guardian interview with him last weekend. Fascinating stuff; interesting to see how he shot himself in the foot after Timecop... always liked his stuff (well, earlier movies, anyway).

Watched Jaws 2 last night, maybe the first time in twenty years. I watch the original about three times a year when teaching film - and it's one of my all time favourites, so it's no hardship.

This is so alarming poor in comparison that I feel I should show them back to back as an example of what can go wrong. Slow, utterly dull, Brody is never in peril - or has anything to do - expect for the last five minutes. Sad to hear Schieder was forced by the studio into doing this one as he left The Deerhunter (for God's sake why?). Awful at every level.

I just don't get it, although some of his action stuff in this was fantastic, and he wasn't doing a silly accent.

Think it's because I really liked him in Snatch, that I just don't really see him as an action man :)

My other half thinks I have a man crush on him, ew!

I like The Transporter (well the first 2, the third was duff), and of course Crank and Death Race were actually really good too. Not really seen much of his other stuff but I'm beginning to think I'll have to check out The Expendables just to see the biggest collection of action actors gathered together in one place. Christ, they really did have the lot didn't they? Even Dolph Lundgren!

Avengers (assemble)

Wow. This was more than a bit crap. I was expecting great things; people had talked up Joss Wheldons script and how it was more than endless action etc etc but what there was came across as confused and muddled. Made me very much want to see Iron Man 3 though.

I mean, hokey aliens, an invasion via flying sledges and a few armoured flying worm things? That was the best they could come up with? In a nutshell that is the problem with the Avengers, and the JLA too- a collection of individually super super heroes always need a foe on the next level to fight and a few Mighty Morphin Power Ranger baddies weren't up to scratch.

Disappointing.

Inception on Blu-ray.

The only thing I knew about this film going in was that the story was meant to be really complicated, but I didn't find that at all. Everything that it is going on is clearly explained and the story is backed up by some great action sequences. I did like the ending of the film although I guessed it the first time DiCaprio explained the purpose of his little spinning top.

Headhunters - an excellent thriller, right from the get-go. Darkly humourous and really gripping in places. Almost saddened to hear of the inevitable Hollywood remake.

Carnage - proof that Christoph Waltz can do no wrong. Thought I'd hate this but was grinning (and cringing) from ear to ear the entire time. Jodie Foster was great as the repellent liberal hysteric. Waltz walks off with the show with a single look at the camera. Ace.

Immortals - Actually wasn't aware that this was the Theseus/Clash of the Titans riff it turned out to be. Tarsam Singh has an amazing eye for detail, and I found this to be utterly gripping. Interesting to see the Gods as youths - had no idea they were so tasty with the old melee. Wish I'd seen it months ago.

If you haven't already, you should see Singh's other, imo better movies. They look absolutely stunning - The Fall in particular.

Yeah, I bought The Fall for my partner. One of the reasons I finally saw Immortals was on hearing he'd directed it.

Watching the making of, I was surprised to see that he was a lot older than I thought. Figured he was some new hotshot, with all this flash.

The Help - one for the missus, but actually really enjoyed it. Great story and amazing to think that it was a reality for many people just 50 years ago

Kung- Fu Panda 2 - does everything a sequel should: Bigger, better, more. Liked. A lot, but it made both my sons cry

Watched Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" last night having regularly cited it as one of my favourite films of all time, but in truth, having not actually watched it for 15 years or more.

Utterly brilliant!

Finally got to see Ted last night, absolutely loved it.

The nods and winks to TV and movies of McFarlane's youth are great and they're pretty much what I was watching back then too so it pressed my nostalgia buttons very well.

Seeing the near complete re-creation of a scene from "Airplane!" was very good and seeing a certain star from a certain SF film was great.

Fun stuff and I look forward to watching it again when it comes out on disc.

21 Jump Street.

Not sure how it happened, but this is really funny! We both loved it, which is almost unheard of with a comedy.

The Hunger Games

Sat through the movie expecting it to be a bit of a watered down experience and it wasn't actually too bad, in fact it felt fairly close to the novels. It still feels like a complete rip off of Battle Royale, and nowhere near as gritty / compelling but there's definitely something about it that's engaging.

Maybe it's just Jennifer Lawrence's chest.

Some of the special effects were hilarious though, particularly the dropship bits which looked like wonky old BBC Chromakey in places :)
