Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Was brainless, fun fluff. Not sure how I feel about Jeremy Renner being written is as Brandt so he can take over the series when Cruise steps down... same as in Bourne, then. Oh, and Tom Cruise is finally starting to look old. And odd.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Fincher version).

Better made, slighty less horrible, although I prefer both leads in the original version. If you haven't seen the original, this is well worth a look. Expect to need a bath afterwards.

Cruise has just turned 50. In the words of Danny Glover, he's getting too old for this shit.

He is indeed. It's when you see him in interviews where they haven't managed to pancake him in production make-up, he looks like an egyptian mummy :)

Can't believe they're even considering taking seriously offering him the role of Christian Grey in the '50 shades' movie. I mean ffs, is someone casting from a 20 year old cast sheet ?

Film has turned towards people who look like models but can't act for shit imho. There aren't enough film stars about.

Ooh! Looks like the Dredd flick is actually getting rave reviews across the board! Good stuff! Dredd Review

Gritty, violent, a return to 80s-style action flicks? All good news!

Same here but it sounds like my fears are that it's not going to be enough like the Dredd I knew (which, to be fair, was a good 12 years or more ago) but it sounds like it's a lot like the Dredd people who stayed faithful to the progs actually know now.

Urban nails Dredd too, which didn't really come across in the trailers. Dang I want to go see it now!

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises

Was lucky enough to be invite to a preview this evening. Very nice, but a little odd to be searched for recording equipment, and have staff watch you watch the film the entire time, but really pleased to be there.

The film? Very well made, just not as good as the first two, for my money. Ledger really did elevate the second movie to a staggering degree. Hardy's Bane is never especially interesting - and everyone left the cinema moaning that they could ony make out half of his dialogue, the rest is lost behind the mask.

Felt a little long and with the odd moment of absurdity, I'd give it 8/10. But I think I'm being a bit generous. And if you haven't seen the first two, don't bother until you have. A lot of this will be nonsensical otherwise.

...yeah, I wasn't very impressed. Maybe a generous 5/10, because I know that Christopher Nolan is capable of making a good movie. It's just not this one.

The Dark Knight Rises.

LOVED it.
Go see it. (But make sure you've seen the other 2 first).

The man speaks sense. Saw it in glorious IMAX.

I think this film is unfairly being held below its predecessor but imho Bane its every bit the villain Ledger was (menacing and terrifying on a complete other axis), and while TDK was a blow away standalone film, TDKR is amazing within the context of the series itself and the conclusion the series deserves.

So glad I wasn't spoiled on the plot - the main twist was both unexpected and yet extremely satisfying.

The amazing spider man.

Andrew Garfield makes an excellent Peter Parker but unfortunately the film itself doesn't match. Nothing carries any emotional weight, the pacing is all wrong, and the film is far too quick to shift from the interesting Gwen Stacy storyline to the dull and simplistic Dr Conners one.

Saw TDKR last night, enjoyed it a lot and the change of scale from TDK to this was rather good. I do wish Bane had been a bit easier to understand though and I hope they do something to make him a bit more understandable on the disc release.

Weird thing about Bane's voice was that it sounded overdubbed - that the noise didn't seem to come from his mouth during filming but rather from some booming other place that filled the cinema.

That said I think I understood around 80% of his lines (and boy does he get some good ones).

I thought his voice sounded absolutely ridiculous, and completely detracted from scenes that were supposed to be serious.

How on Earth does something like this slip past "QA" or whatever similarly relevant department should be involved?

I bet it'll be even worse for the home versions, if the recent sound quality of Nolan's flicks is anything to go by. No matter what I do, I can't watch Inception on the decent telly downstairs, it's just too sodding mumbly.

The Dark Knight Rises was fantastic. To mirror my comments from EG though, they really shouldn't have let the work experience kid do the sound editing. The music volume shot up and down seemingly at random. I didn't have much trouble understanding Bane (Music being too loud in places to hear any dialog aside), but I agree it did seem completely disassociated from his body. Bit weird.

Cell 211.

Pretty good Spanish thriller about a new prison guard who gets stuck when a riot breaks out and then has to impersonate a new inmate to survive. Comments that it's Die Hard in a prison are utter balls, of course.

Hard Candy.

Watched it last night and my balls are still aching. Well made but not the sort of thing you can watch for any pleasure. May have missed a couple of plot beats as I was wincing so much.

Mars Needs Moms

Watched the first half to make sure it was suitable for the kids and enjoyed it. Think it was a critical flop? Seemed enjoyable enough.

A Monster in Paris

Looked sumptuous but Paris was very empty, I suppose the budget was spent on detail and not on a lot of background characters milling about. The plot was typical French, quirky and reasonably entertaining.

I can see why it was a critical flop, but I quite enjoyed it, the animation is good (even if critics weren't impressed by it), and the bit near the end actually brought tears to my eyes.

Yup yup. Absolutely excruciating watching, the film is put together very well overall but "the scene" totally nails it.

Reading an interview with Karl Urban, he really does "get it" with Dredd doesn't he. Doesn't look like there's going to be a sequel but he'd be in it if he could, and he was also adamant that Dredd shouldn't take his helmet off in the flick.

Yep, he definitely gets it.

I swear though, if they don't have another go and do a Dark Judges flick, that'll be one of the biggest missed opportunities in cinematic history.

Watched this yesterday. I've seen maybe a half-dozen of the TV episodes and I've never liked it.

Thought the film was great. :)

I'll be very sad if A) there isn't and B) they get someone else to play Dredd.

Clash of the Titans (2010 version).

Not a patch on the original but was mildly entertaining. Just seemed a bit too short. More things happened in the original.

The Iron Lady.

An impressive performance from Streep doesn't save an absolute mess of a film. Say what you want about Thatcher's life, and I find the film snidely pokes at her a little too unkindly, but this felt empty and could have happily ended in an hour. Poor at every level.
