Get the Gringo/How I spent my summer vacation.

Mel Gibson gets back to doing what he did best in the 80s before abusing Jewish people.

Fairly run-of-the-mill exploitation fare but hugely enjoyable nonetheless. The little kid is great in it and the shoot-outs were extremely well done. Pretty fucking violent. 7/10.

Shame

Michael Fassbender is a sex addict who struggles to make emotional connections with people but can fuck like a superhero.

Too much was left open to interpretation for my liking, like why exactly were he and his sister the way they were? Were they abused as children? But otherwise an engrossing and extremely well directed film. Some of the long, single-cut shots were remarkable.

Michael Fassbender makes me laugh every time he does that weird "expose bottom teeth / cum face" thing. I think he's based his entire career on it.

I watched Shame over the weekend, and pretty much agree with what HA said. I found it rather uncomfortable to watch, not least because of the bizarre, almost-incestuous relationship between the siblings. In fact, my theory is that the main cause of Fassbender's frustrations and addiction was because he wanted to sleep with his sister.

Fantastically shot though, and a compelling watch - the singing scene in particular was absolutely mesmerising. 8/10

Transporter 3

Hadn't seen it before, usually have a soft spot for Jason Statham flicks (the missus describes him as my 'man crush' worryingly)

Shit film though. Too much talk, too much of a meandering plot, not enough punchy punchy drivey drivey.

3/10

Likewise the shot where he went for a jog through the city (NY?) and the camera just tracked him for about ten minutes without ever breaking a sweat.

Same with the conversation between him and Mary Anne in the restaurant - I'm sure it was just one single cut. They must have just ad-libbed a lot of it because there was too much script to just remember and deliver so flawlessly.

Interesting. Given how great Prometheus looks, and now Hampton Fancher's back on board as writer, the Bladerunner sequel (and it is a sequel, ooer) might actually NOT suck.

Bladerunner movie will be a sequel, confirmed

Hmmm.

Not sure the script was the star of the show in the first film tbh.

"Get yo aahhhs to maahhhhs!"

It is indeed a good film. Somehow I fear the new one won't be though.

It's weird, I never liked Predator around the time it came out, but watching it now, it is actually bloody good and unlike a lot of Arnie films, has aged fairly well too.

The effects in Total Recall are really shonky in places but this sort of adds to its charm and appeal. I still can't watch it without thinking of Flashback for some reason though :)

I genuinely can't think of any way at all that predator could be improved- unless you count the destruction of all the sequels from space/time.

I concur, the whole Aliens vs Predator thing can get sucked into a vortex along with the Resident Evil films.

Another Arnie great. Last Action Hero. Ignore the annoying kid, skip past the daftness of it and marvel at just how utterly crazy it was. It also spawned one of the best Bally / Midway film-based Pinball tables of all time.

Edge of Darkness 8/10

Remake of the Brit 80's mini-series, this time with Mel Gibson as the cop hunting for his daughter's killer. Sounds as generic as all hell, but don't want to spoil anything. Really enjoyed it.

Body of Lies 7/10

What happened to Russell Crowe?! Him and DiCaprio directed by Ridley Scott. Timely thriller with actually not very much to say. Missus got bored and wandered off an hour and a half in. Not bad action, pacy plot with rather a lot squeezed in... but the whole thing feels a little lacklustre.

Think LAH had my favourite Arnie one liner of all time:

"Want to be a farmer?"
*kicks baddie in nuts
"Here, have two acres."

With not much on telly and deciding that I can leave Max Payne by himself for a while I decided to fire up Netflix.

A bit of a browse of the SF section and I thought I'd give Pandorum a go, quite well rated by other Netflix users so why not.

The story is there's a big ship transporting 20K people to the only other M class planet humans have discovered and two people wake from hypersleep to take their stint at the "wheel" as it's a loooooong trip. Except the ship seems pretty much fucked, systems aren't working and both of them are suffering memory loss from extended sleep. Cue a rather entertaining 108 minutes of working out what's going on, with some decent horror and a very nicely built ship set.

A recommendation from me, ignore the Rotten Tomatoes rating, good stuff.

Plus it has Antje Traue, a German actress that I'm glad to see is doing more English language roles (she's a villain in the new Superman film), she's gorgeous. :-)

Prometheus - I really liked it. Could almost have been a completely standalone story with nothing to do with Alien though, and will totally polarise audiences like a lot of Ridley Scott films. Also, still lots of unanswered questions, so I smell a 'middle part' to finish linking it to Alien. Beautifully filmed and Blade Runneresque in tone. Fassbender and the woman doctor are excellent too.

Avatar on Blu-ray.

Yes it does look absolutely amazing, but there is no subtlety to either the one dimensional characters or the story line. I also thought the film was about an hour too long with quite a few sequences that seemed to exist purely to show off how good the cgi was.

Overall I would say that it is the technology in Avatar that impresses far more than story and hopefully in the future it will be used for something more interesting than the inevitable Avatar sequels!

Warrior.

Thought it was fantastic, start to finish. Heard so much about Hardy in this, but I think Joel Edgerton was more interesting. Seem to like him in everything he does. Brilliant finale - I was knackered just watching it.

Young Victoria.

I think I love Emily Blunt. This was bearable even without that though. Missus and daughter loved it.

Tonight, got a choice of The Wrestler and Take Shelter. Can't decide!

Opted for The Wrestler... unfortunately there's a bloody great crack in the disc - why don't people mention this to Lovefilm?

Watched Take Shelter. It's not bad; bit ponderous and overlong, but rather an interesting premise.

Haywire 2/10

The worst thing I've watched all year. Vacuous direction; dire soundtrack. I shouldn't have to mention exposition and pacing issues in a fucking action movie Mr Soderburgh. What the fuck were you upto?

To have such a capable lead and piss her away in something so mediocre is a sin. Ended up hating everyone involved - except the joker who cut McGregor's hair. Top trolling.

The Descendants. Clooney is such a brilliant actor, yet pulls it off in a quiet and understated way. The lass playing his eldest daughter was a bit of all right too.

Watched the first half an hour of Iron Skies and think it has Popcorn Movie of the the Year potential. Can't believe it went straight to DVD over here :/

Point Blank. Not a remake of the Lee Marvin original. This is a French thriller about an orderly who is suddenly dragged into the criminal underworld when his girlfriend is kidnapped.

Which is a shit, no spoilers, explanation of a very pacy and rather well done film. See the trailer for details.

My daughter's just starting to show an interest in the Ghibli films. I have absolutely loved 'em for years (mostly thanks to the love they used to get on EG) but showing them to her and seeing them again with a fresh pair of eyes just made me appreciate how bloody good they really are.

I promised her a piece of chocolate if she could tell me who did the voice of Calcifer in the 'dubbed' version of Howl's Moving Castle. 2 seconds into Calcifer's first spoken lines she shouted "Mike Wazowski!" which was close enough. She still got the choc.

We've seen Kiki, Totoro, Spirited Away and now Howl's. Any more recommendations for kid-friendly Ghibli (ie something that isn't too grim or violent so not Princess Mononoke or Nausicaa, poor lass is only 4 and doesn't like scary stuff)
