Zombieland. It's either a 6/10, or proof that being off work with stress is not the ideal condition to watch a movie I really should have loved.

Kick Ass

Easily one of the best superhero films I've ever seen, this. It's funny how all the billboard ads make it out to be yet another unfunny spoof film, I even fell for that myself before checking the EG thread.

Sure, it has all the superhero movie cliches in there, a contrived and predictable plot, and the inevitable cheesy melodrama. But it's also tremendous fun to watch, very violent at times, and with some great scenes + lines. Top acting all-round too - yes, even Nic Cage (Adam West impersonation - great touch). Surprised to read that most of the main actors were British, the accents were certainly convincing.

Hit Girl easily steals the show, though. I just read that the same actress will be playing the vampire in the American remake of Let The Right One In, so that role is in good hands.

Seriously - don't be fooled by the ads and just go watch it.

Certainly the best Iraq film so far but don't go in expecting Bourne Joins the Army. General plot - he works to find WMDs but there aren't any; creepy guy is bad guy (not a spoiler - it's in the bloody trailer and is obvious the first time he appears about 5 minutes in).

The action is good, Damon is good and the local Iraqi's are well written. The only thing it suffers from is that there are few surprises throughout and you can guess most of the plot well before it happens.

The shaky cam is a touch over the top in a few places but as long as you sit a reasonable distance from the screen you'll be fine. It's not like Transformers 2 where I was convinced my head was about to explode from the dreadful camera work - in this it works.

Planet Hulk
These marvel animated films seem to be getting worse, at least they started off being really good. This follows the basic plot of the comic where hulk is sent off to another planet by the Avengers but ends up landing on the wrong planet where he ends up fighting as a gladiator then saving the world.

Too much has been cut from the source and it ends up feeling like a long saturday morning cartoon. It's a bit of a waste of the material but it's definitely watchable and kinda fun.

500 days of summer
I hate romantic comedies as much as I can hate any film. This seems to avoid that but largely because of Joseph Gordon Levett's role and performance. It comes across as entirely believable and not self indulgent or selfish (look someone in love but can't get the girl etc.). Zooey is bearable but I found it hard to find her as likable as I think I was supposed to.

It tries to be a bit too 'quirky' at times but it just about pulls it off.

I actually found this extremely funny when I saw it. I think of many other films that I've had that and Woody Harrelson is the best I've seen him since Cheers.

Wichita being on screen so much helped too.

Yep, it's called Let Me In and is due out later this year. I wasn't keen on the idea too, but it sounds promising from what I've read so far. It won't be as good as the original but it might not be complete crap either.

I won't explain the premise, just go watch the red band trailer. It's incredibly silly and easily one of the funniest films I've seen in a long while. Release outside the US, where I saw it, seems entirely random according to IMDB so I've no idea when it'll hit the UK. 9/10

Robots (from the makers of Ice Age).

Not good. Very lightweight story, padded with immature jokes, sight gags, and dated (2005) pop-culture references. Even the action seemed to much like they had a videogame in mind when they planned it.

Clash of the Titans 2D
The reviews before made me think that this might be a really terrible film but it isn't. The plot is wafer thin, most of the characters are forgettable and the action isn't anything special. The ridiculousness and over the top performances by Fiennes and Neeson are amusing - taking the part seriously and slightly campy at the same time (the first time you see Zeus in his armour...).

Main bloke is a bit too bland - his performance is neither amusing or notable in any other way. Also, his Aussie accent is slightly offputting.

Gemma Arterton is the best thing about this. She acts miles better than in Bond and she shows more of her other assets throughout.

Overall it isn't bad, it's average but decent fun. Compared to Transformers 2 it's brilliant.

Toy Story 1 and 2 blu ray
The films are as good as I remember although I'm sure 2 used to be a lot funnier than 1 but it isn't. The picture and sound look great on Blu Ray and, despite their age, look almost as good as a lot of the modern stuff probably because of the simplicity of the character designs.

Hmmm, I thought I'd love this and when I saw the BR on a cheap deal I grabbed it. Wish I hadn't bothered because it's the sort of film you could only really watch once.

Absolute zero plot. A few good gore effects. Fucking stupendous (if throwaway) cameo and a hot female lead maketh not a good zombie flick.

Harrelson was good but not good enough to save this from a meagre 4/10

Totally agree with this, except I managed to avoid being "spoiled" on the actual tone of the film, and was thus both surprised and amazed when it suddenly hit me that they were playing for keeps.

Was also looking forward to Hot Tub Time Machine after seeing the trailer for it, so very excited now after reading Whizzo's comments.

Very nice destruction scenes the rest was ok.
The scenes where water rushes into one of the ships looked jarringly low-budget. Probably because it was the only scene with real water and very little computer shenanigans.

Also; the actress how played the daughter of the president has a very pretty face.

Very basic story, inconsistent CGI. Felt like I was watching a video game and not an award winning movie. Would have been much better if it borrowed some of the epicness of Lord of the Rings especially in the final battle.

Dune

Just finished reading the Frank Herbert novel again (for the Nth time) so thought I'd watch the David Lynch film again too.

In truth, it's still a mess of a movie; if ever there was a film that suffered in the cutting room, this was it. The second half is terribly rushed and with so many characters and ideas to explore, why on earth did they introduce a 'new' technology in the weirding modules? Still, I can't help but enjoy it; Dune has long been one of my very favourite novels and it's always a joy to see the legend of Muad'dib come to life.

Rumour has it that a new version might be in the making; at least it won't have Sting in it...

Sat through the extended version of that once. Once only. Never again.

Some of the art direction was fucking amazing though. I'm still a bit sad that Jodorowski / Giger never got their version past the pre-production stages, as that could seriously have been awesome (can you imagine Giger's take on Sand worms?)

It's a very interesting and quirky film but I bet it's the one David Lynch would love to scrub off his CV.

Iron Man 2
I enjoyed it a lot and it has more good moments than the first, it does seem to have a bit too much going on resulting in some slightly odd pacing around the middle but Downey helps it just about stay together.

There are a couple of bits obviously linked to their other upcoming films, all of them were good even if they felt like the studio had put them in, rather than the story needing them.

Scarlett put in a surprisingly strong performance and I would certainly be interested in seeing more of her (...) in this role. Rourke was fine even if I don't think his character was really needed - it could've been handled with Rockwell (good as always).

It looks beautiful (something I struggle to put next to many films) and that is easily it's strongest point. The story isn't bad, the script isn't bad but nothing changes the 'imagery' is by far its strongest point, possibly at the expense of other things.

Enjoyable and entertaining (not entirely sure how it became the most successful at the box office). Sam Worthington remains a gaping void of a personality who can't do a non-aussie/NZ accent.

I will be surprised if you still hold this view if you ever re-watch it.

I see I didn't actually post in here, but somewhere else I basically said that Avatar is the worst 10/10 (as in, my personal rating) movie I've ever seen. It's really, really weak is every category except for awesomeness, where it scores an unassailable awesome/awesome.

Oh it's certainly not a great story and is wafer thin, it's just better than I was expecting and not far from Cameron's usual standard. For an FX driven film it's above average.

It did get a bit too hippyish in a few places (most notably the bit where all the Naavi are sat down and swaying) and is full of cliches but it's okay.

I actually quite liked the story :)

Going to try and catch it again on bluray sometime (I pre-ordered it, but let my friend borrow it on day of release, oops!) so I guess that'll be a good tester, to see if it's genuinely good, or whether I was just blinded by the effects.

So did I. I especially liked it in The Last of the Mohicans, and also in The Last Samurai, mainly because I think white people are just better at everything, including being members of non-white communities. ;)

But seriously though, yes, like I say, it is an *awesome* story, otherwise it wouldn't keep on getting re-used. But this doesn't change the fact that re-using it at this stage of the game for your massive "future of the cinema" epic scores you a big fat zero on the wow-o-meter.

If you're going to do something like that, you have to bring your own spin to the table. What actually happened was they removed any possible spin by making the human side almost pantomime in their villainary (it looks to me like they maybe thought about having Giovanni Ribisi's be a bit more morally ambivalent, but it was equally clearly ditched by the time of the final script), and the aliens overly sympathetic.

You know which humans-invade-alien-homeland story I both like more and give more credit than this? Lost freaking Planet, because at least it's up to you to decide whether and which humans are actually in the wrong for various different issues - it's just not really touched on in the game proper.

Saw Avatar. I'd purposely been waiting for the home release (I've still got a bugbear about sharing a cinema with mobile-phone using chattering chavscum) and it didn't disappoint on a big screen with surround at home (3D? Phah, who needs that shit, like Ebert said - most people "see" 2D films in 3D anyway).

Hippy plot aside, it was pretty good stuff. Fantastic effects though the CGi characters still don't move right, everything's still way too fluid.

Loved the mechs and the big copters though, someone's definitely been watching a lot of Japanese Anime for design ideas.

All in all not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
