I've been looking around at upscaling DVD players today. Seeing as they tend to be so cheap it seems a decent thing to buy to extend the life of my DVD collection.

Does have anyone have experience with them and can recommend any particular models?

This is the new version of the one I got to go with my 32" Samsung LCD last year and, for the money, I think the performance is pretty decent.

Worth a look if you're on a budget.

Cheers, I have shall have a ponder.

I had been using the X360 via VGA and results were very good. But I've started using the component connection instead - because on my TV at least - games and HD-DVDs look much better.

Mine's hooked up via HDMI and the picture is superb.

"Collateral" in particular looks amazing - though that could just be down to Michael Mann's skill at shooting LA at night.

My HDMI socket is already taken though. Which means yet another splitter.

I've already got an optical splitter, that'd be on more I'd have to get. And another bloody optical cable!

I had that problem on the optical side of things - the two inputs on my Denon amp were taken by 360 and Sky box.

So I went down the coaxial route. My untrained ear can't tell the difference, though that could be down to the 5 crappy Pioneer speakers I've got hooked up to it (the ".1" is a decent replacement woofer, thankfully).

Ive got a very good Sony DVD/surround combo system. I tend not to use it as a DVD player anymore - more as the DD/DTS amp/speaker system.

Got a 15 optical splitter from Maplin that takes in 3 inputs. The PS3 and X360 are taking up two of those, but there's room for one more.

I've got this, which is absolutely fantastic.

I have heard that the Toshiba HDMI up-scalling DVD player in the same price range is absolutely brilliant too.

Sub-150 upscaling players are all much of a muchness. I have a Philips HDMI player and it's fab, although I've heard very good things about the Sammys and SOnys mentioned earlier in this thread

I've just ordered the Samsung one GingerMagician mentioned. Using the 10 Google Checkout discount I got it for 49.99 at Empiredirect.

An update on this.

The DVD player arrived on Thursday and the bloody thing didn't work. It kept locking up and displaying gibberish on the LCD screen.

Thankfully the customer service at Empire Direct was really good. A quick phone call and a redelivery was arranged for today. Good to their word a new DVD player arrived today and the old one taken away.

Am quite impressed with the unit despite it being a cheap and cheerful 50. It's amazing how much detail is there in a DVD to survive being upscaled to 720p or 1080i. The opening sequence of Revenge of the Sith looks fab in 720p, very detailed, not quite genuine HD, but it still looks very good indeed.

It is an excellent system test, there's lots of detail in the opening sequence.

Besides I reckon it's a bloody good film.

But for reasons many of you can work out, it's not a movie I'll be able to see all the way through for a very long time.

Yeah, some of the acting is bloody awful.

Glad the recommendation worked out for you Harry - at that sort of price you can't really go too far wrong.

Get a bit of Michael Mann (preferably Heat) tested on there. Or maybe Master & Commander - splintering boats ftHDw!

My plan is to watch Master & Commander on it later, one of my favourite movies and the most awesome DTS track.

Hmm interesting to hear you say that. I never got round to watching it as I thought it would be a bit shit.

So you'd recommend it?

Why would it be a bit shit? It's an Oscar nominated movie starring a proven star, directed by Peter Weir and based on the finest historical novels ever written - all wrapped up in some amazing ILM effects and a brilliant (and very loud) DTS mix.

Yes I'd very much recommend it. :)

+1

I had reservations about it but it's actually bloody good. The audio is probably the best I've ever heard from any DVD, period.

It wasn't a bad film per se.

In Oscar's world:

Dances With Wolves > Goodfellas
Forrest Gump > Pulp Fiction

Bunch of incontinent fools!
