I've played Ys games before, they started as fun Zelda-a-likes with bump combat, you'd go barging into the baddies anywhere but head-on to defeat them. This is all I can remember about them, not the story. Not the characters. Just the bumpy-bumpy.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana changes this though, and I'm sure I'll have no problem retaining this intriguing tale. You start the game as Adol Christin, an impossibly beautiful boy with red hair, and the starriest eyes this side of a Powerpuff Girl. Adol finds himself onboard The Lombardia, a ship bound for Eresia where he and his best pal Dogi (disappointingly not a doggy) can get on with their manly adventuring. Unfortunately before they can reach their destination they are attacked by tentacles (yes, this is a Japanese game) and wind up being marooned on the mysterious Seiren Island, a legendary place only talked about in hushed whispers.

This is where the game starts proper, and unlike traditional JRPGS the story isn't an epic quest to save the world/princess/chickenMcMaguffin, it's instead a tale of survival and Ys VIII is all the better for it as it brings a real freshness both narratively and in the gameplay mechanics. 

Adol is tasked with rescuing any survivors from the wreck and transpoting them back to base camp, this not only adds to your ability to explore by allowing you to shift blockages from your path (more people = more workers to clear obstacles), they also set up shop at your camp accroding to their specialities, so you'll soon have a place with all the mod cons including a doctor, blacksmith and vendors. All the rescued have their own stories to tell too, and will often want you to carry out busywork while you are out and about, so there is always something to do.

Exploration and combat takes place in real time as your party runs about the island set to some absolutely glorious fully orchestrated rock tunes. You have a party of three at any one time and your attack style can be slash (for normal enemies), strike (for armoured) or pierce (for flying types). You can switch between any member of your party with a quick button press, so combined with parries and dodges, special attacks and supermoves the combat has all you could ask for and more. It's seriously addictive once you get into you zone and let your fingers do the talking.

As the game progresses the story elements ramp up too, sometimes your friends aren't exactly who they seem, and why is Adol having strange dreams of an ancient land each time you set up a new camp?

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is is one of those rare games where barely a foot is set wrong, levelling is easy with minimal grinding, fast travel points are intelligently placed. There are even times when the game throws a mni horde mode at you when monsters start attacking your village, these are a nice change of pace and can be ignored if you so choose, but you'd miss out on some fine loot if you did.

Some of the textures can look pretty ropey at times, and I'm thinking that maybe one or two of these are holdovers from the Vita version, but for a game this fun the smallest niggles can be safely overlooked. Do yourself a favour and take a holiday on Seiren Island, you won't regret it.
