 - Ubisoft, Reflections, Driver: San Francisco, Redundancies, Blame Canada!

Ubisoft has confirmed that several members of the Reflections North team have been laid off, ahead of the completion of the latest Driver title, Driver: San Francisco.

The project will now be part developed by staff left at Reflections, and part developed by Ubisoft's gigantic ever-expanding Montreal studios.

20 staff were ushered into a room, handed their redundancy notices then escorted from the premises. Staff now working on the game fear that they will be instantly laid off if the game doesn't perform well at retail, if they're not just given the boot as soon as it ships.

Restructuring is taking place at Ubisoft, with the Montreal studio absorbing several staff and teams. Sign of the times that Canada's videogames industry is a booming and blooming colossus while the UK is struggling to stay in the game as publishers cull very talented teams.

I love it. It's the rally game I've been waiting for since Rallisport Challenge 2 (and it's a lot more technical / satisfying than that!) ...
