Runner3 is an ugly game, that's not a criticism, it's pretty much what developer Choice Provisions were going for. Imagine a cross between Ren and Stimpy and the awesome puppet web series Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared and you'd be some way there. Not content with all this visual splendour your ears will also be accosted by one Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario himself! I hope Nintendo don't know you are moonlighting, Charles, their lawyers are formidable I hear.

As for the gameplay, would you be terribly surprised to hear that you are going to be doing a fair amount of running? You don't have to hold right to go here, you are always running, but you are responsible for jumping over obstacles and bizarre baddies, kicking through walls, knowing when to hold the jump button down so you float down to earth more gently and mastering that bloody double jump. Now imagine doing them all at the same time in quick succession. Runner3 isn't messing about, the game is one tough cookie.

Nothing ever feels unfair however, Runner3 eases you in gently before asking you to master another move, and if you mess up it's definitely your fault, and you know it. The tunes are also there to help you, as Runner3 can be played as a rhythm action game, with button presses corresponding to the beat of the music, the only caveat here being that I don't feel the music quite hits the highs of BIT.TRIP.RUNNER or Runner2, which is a shame.

With branching paths, gem runs, unlockable characters and superb cartoon styled retro levels Runner 3 is a generous content rich game and when it has it's hooks into you, you'll be lost for a long time. Just be careful not to launch your switch into the wall when you fail for the umpteenth time, you'll get it eventually.
