Controversial Japanese game Rapelay has been pulled from production and removed from the developer's website.

We recently reported on the furor over the Japanese rape-simulation game Rapelay, and how the developers had shrugged off the protests of US campaigners Equality Now.

However, the issue has now caught the attention of the Japanese news media (having previously been more the focus of American and European news), and has even been featured on Japanese television. The Canned Dogs blog claims that this extra attention has now put the entire "eroge" (erotic game) industry at risk.

Illusion, the developers of Rapelay, have now removed the controversial game from their website, and the game is now believed to be out of production. It is thought that this is in response to the sudden media attention.

RapeLay is a Japanese videogame that allows the player to simulate sexual violence against virtual females, including stalking girls on trains, and raping virgins and their mothers. The rapes continue till the mother and her daughters begin to enjoy it. When one of the women becomes pregnant, the player then must force her to have an abortion.

The game hit the news in February when Amazon.com removed it from sale on their website.

Equality Now, based in New York, had been campaigning against such rape simulators and the normalisation of sexual violence in Japan.

But Illusion, the makers of RapeLay, had shrugged off the campaign, saying that they were "bewildered" by the move. "We make the games for the domestic market and abide by laws here," a spokesperson had said.

It seems now that the Japanese domestic market is no longer comfortable with games such as Rapelay being on the shelves.

I will say, though: what sort of hypocrites attack this game?

If you want Rapelay off the shelves, why don't you want Madworld or any violent game off the shelves?

Violence is violence.
