Now Shaun White wants to put a huge dent in Tony Hawk's retirement fund

Poor Tony Hawk. First he has to suffer the embarrasment of Ride being a bit pap. Then he also gets an annual kicking from EA's sublime Skate series.

Now his bestest buddy and skateboarding supremo Shaun White is no longer content to keep his action on the ski slopes. As an accomplished skateboarder himself, White is putting his extreme sports muscle behind Ubisoft's upcoming Shaun White's Skateboarding - a game that promises to "melt your mind" (White's words) with a more realistic and novel take on skateboard action.

There is a gap in the market for something that dispenses with ball-shagging, bum jumping and those free-roaming cityscapes that tick all the right boxes for urban boarders but fall short of offering the thrills, spills and skills of the original Tony Hawk games. So can White's team come up with the goods? You'll have to wait till later in 2010 to find out...

I don't follow skateboarding in any sense (I do put it on TV but only so I don't get distracted by the television), but Shaun White is such a cool dude.

I reckon the game should be pretty big, following his Olympic win, and all.

If his idea of going back to the sort of level-by-level approach rather than a huge open world pans out, then it could be excellent.

Course, that would all depend on how the thing's controlled. Would also depend on whether the game is a multi-format (ie led on the Wii) job, or something properly tailored for each platform.

Either way, I foresee cheeky integration with the Ride board.

Well, there's a good chance of that. Remember, Shaun White's snowboarding's Wii version, developed by Ubisoft, was widely praised, especially for its use of the balance board.

So there's a precedent for expecting a good balance board game when White and Ubisoft team up :)

Oh aye I've no doubt that the Wii version will be "fun" - Just means that the proper versions will inevitably suck :)
