Battle Princess Madelyn deserves a hearty dose of congratulations. A kickstarter darling, smashing funding and stretch goals and most importantly, releasing in good time. For good reason too; playing on nostalgia coupled with a sweet story to boot. You see, the creative director of the project, Chris Obritsch, had a young daughter, Madelyn, who loved to see her dad play through the Capcom classic, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. So much she wanted to be in the game, however: ‘“But girls can’t be knights, Daddy. Only boys!” she said, to which he answered “Pshh…What color do you want your armor to be?” The answer was pink! And that’s how this game started.

Bless. As much as Ghouls ‘n Ghosts inspired the games production from the start, with the titular Madelyn front and centre. Battle Princess Madelyn itself is an old school styled action platformer; a world to explore and conquer through gorgeously drawn environments together with a great music score. The game has a lovely craft to it and you can see the passion that has gone into the project. While the setup is derivative, (evil wizard kills girl’s dog while ransacking the hometown, as such an adventure is born to track him down and ultimately destroy him) a fair few surprises are in store. The dog comes back as a ghost for one, resurrected to fight along side Madelyn; this is also the premise for John Wick 4 which is a very exciting cross-over prospect.

A metroidvania at its core, you are expected to traipse across the world, hacking through enemies across multiple environments, collecting upgrades, backtracking and so on as you make your way to the wizard’s abode. Done well, metroidvanias are some of the best games of this style out there (see Hollow Knight), and how well Battle Princess Madelyn works for you really depends on how old school you like your games. This sticks to the Ghouls'n'Ghosts template and offers very little in way of direction or signposting. It’s pretty marmite, some will love the challenge while others will hate it, so do bear this in mind before considering a purchase. Patches have improved this since release, but it’s not an easy ride if you haven’t played a game such as this before.

Brilliantly, Battle Princess Madelyn also offers an adventure mode for that true Ghouls'n'Ghosts side scrolling action adventure experience. Offering a powered up Battle Princess from the off, this is a lovely pick up and play addition to the game if you get stuck within its metroidvania trappings.

Battle Princess Madelyn is an old school, beautifully presented action platformer and metroidvania all in one. You will know already if this is for you or not. It’s certainly for me.
