Right then. First things first. I don't particularly like Call of Duty games. I've always found them slightly distasteful, and a touch too realistic to have any fun with. I did enjoy the first Black Ops instalment though with its combination of futuristic weaponry and oddball story, but I managed to get bored with the sequel.

Why am I giving you all this information? Well after all the negative things written about Call of Duty: Ghosts, I have to be the dissenting voice, raise my hand and yell 'Actually, I had a bloody good time playing this!'.

The not very clear at all plot begins with nuclear explosions in the Middle East wiping out their oil fields, which tips the balance of world power towards South America. For some reason this makes them go crazy ape bonkers, and they hijack one of the US of A's global murder satellites with which they proceed to level a good chunk of said country itself into smoking rubble.

And this where you come in, like James Bond in Moonraker you'll float about shooting bad guys, powering through airlocks and enjoy a short space-walk, as opening to games go this one is pretty darn special, and those folks lucky enough to have seen Gravity may well be having panic attacks on their couches.

Cut to the ground and you find yourself inside the size elevens of Logan Walker, an all American hero type briefly introduced in the opening of the game, as your father tells you the tale of who the Ghosts actually are (spoiler: they are the awesomest army men ever). Apart from a few brief missions this is whose shoes you are going to be filling for the rest of your play time, and my what a play time it is.

I don't really want to spoil a lot of the surprises for you, but there are some cracking set-pieces to be enjoyed in your time with Call of Duty: Ghosts, but I will tell you the best ones all involve getting wet in some fashion, no, not THAT way, the wet with water way. Filth.

'Enough with all this explaining how much fun you had', I can hear you saying, 'tell me about the fucking dog, does the fucking dog die?' Well I'm not telling you, so there. However, I will tell you that Riley (the said dog) is bloody awesome, in both senses of the word bloody. At certain points throughout the game you get to pull out your Nintendo Gamepad Dog-o-Matic, which places you behind the eyeballs of your canine chum, and from here you sneak through grass and pull the throats from the baddies while being gleefully congratulated by your insane owners. It's a lot of fun, and if I'm being honest slightly under-used. More doggy next time please Activision. Or maybe a military attack owl. With lasers on.

Multiplayer in Call of Duty: Ghosts is extremely well catered for, with environment changeable maps entering play for the first time in a CoD game. With NINE different game modes to try out, if you are an online addict you are going to be like a pig in shit here, and if you've yet to try the gentlemen's sport that is online CoD, you can prepare yourself by playing the squads mode, with the A.I. taking the part of your friends and foes. You can even level up your men in this mode now, a sure boon for the n00b who would soon be pwned.

With all this yummy goodness with which to spend your time it's even more of a delight to unlock Extinction mode on completion of the campaign. Here you can pick your class from a choice of four, team up with some co-op buddies and defend some bases from a bunch of freaking aliens. This mode is a laugh riot and to my mind a better choice than the Zombies mode of past games, they are, like, so last season. Hopefully any DLC Activision have on the way can expand on this mode in some way as it's definitely a highlight.

So although the campaign may not be the longest (it took me around seven hours), it's definitely amongst the loudest, think Michael Bay suffering from Parkinsons with his hands all over the explosion switches. When you also account for the copious multiplayer and co-op modes included this package is busting at the seams. What if you aren't a CoD fan? Well neither was I, but I'm certainly a convert to these Ghosts. Needs more dog though.

I've had the prestige edition of this sitting on a side-table for over a week now and still haven't opened it... *sigh*

Still, it was free so even if I hate it then I haven't lost anything from it.
