Have-a-Chillingo-Winter Have a Chillingo Winter

Aren’t Chillingo lovely? Not content with giving us some of the best IOS games out there to brighten up our bleary-eyed morning bus journeys, they’re back with more crazy shenanigans this Winter.

First up is the sequel to highly-rated top-down arcade shooter Super Crossfire: enter Super Crossfire HD! Boasting customisable control methods, a massive upgrade system and the inestimably cool ability to edit the game’s soundtrack via an inbuilt sound editor, Super Crossfire HD sees you blasting away waves of brightly coloured bad-guys and collecting power-ups in the time-honoured tradition of Galaga and the like. The twist with Super Crossfire, as fans will already know, is using multi-touch to flip the screen – shifting your ship from top to bottom or vice-versa – which is the only way to survive the constant barrage of fire. Game-play is fast and furious, and split second reactions count for everything as you dodge & weave your way to victory. It even has Achievements, for those of you who love to track your progress, and I’ve no doubt that come release, those Achievements will become badges of honour in student halls of residence across the globe. Grab the super sexy HD version for your Ipad/Iphone 4 now, or the non-HD version for those of you still rocking older IOS technology.

Next up is the soon to be released Extraction: Project Outbreak also for Iphone/Ipad. Inspired by classics such as Syndicate (the classic one, before anyone chips in) and Cannon Fodder, Extraction is a top down tactical shooter with a pleasing retro feel to it. Tap to move your protagonist, drag/swipe to highlight enemies and our little warrior will attack automatically, turning gameplay into a frantic point/swipe motion that’s surprisingly easy to pick up. Four game modes (Extermination, Rescue, Repair and Escort) mean that the type of challenge varies enough to remain fresh, and coupled with the games impressively detailed, fully procedurally generated levels and whopping upgrade tree, Extraction should see you coming back for more time and time again. Keep an eye out for this baby in your app stores toward the middle of November.

Last in our sights is the wonderfully alliterative Hank Hazard: Stunt Hamster. Also due for a November release, this charming puzzler sees the titular furry cheeked-one overcoming a series of clever physics puzzles. Pop balloons with a touch to send him rolling on his way, collecting as many pickups as possible while keeping the little fella free of the various traps and assorted nasties that dot the route to success. With lots of fun puzzle mechanics and cutesy graphics, this one’s perfect for all ages and will have a few grown-ups scratching their heads too. Four worlds mean a fair few challenges to work your way through, and though the controls are simple touches, this one had me engrossed enough to be frantically tilting the screen in an attempt to get our hairy hero to safety. The Chillingo man, he laugh – and rightly so, 'cause I must have looked like a right berk.

Not one to try on the bus, perhaps. Damn you Chillingo for being so absurdly lovely. Send them hugs and money, this very instant.
