Microsoft closing Xbox servers for good

I'm not sure how many people are affected by this news but it's worth mentioning anyway. Microsoft this week reminded us that next Thursday, April 15th, is the date upon which it will finally close the remaining servers running multiplayer Xbox games.

Need I point out that that's Xbox and not Xbox 360 before you all start to panic.

Of course at this point in time, Xbox games that are still worth playing online are few and far between with perhaps only Crimson Skies, Rallisport Challenge 2 and Halo 2 the exceptions.

But it's not all bad news. In closing these servers, Microsoft will finally be freed up from the left-over Xbox constraints that influence certain things relating to how we game online today, for instance, and perhaps most importantly, finally ridding us of that pesky friends-list limit. A restriction that's not been rectified yet because of the popularity and long tail of Halo 2.

However, speaking of Rallisport Challenge 2, that's one of the few Xbox games that still won't, for reasons never fully explained by Microsoft, work on the Xbox 360. So not only is DICE not ever working on a new RSC game, but now, those of you with still working Xbox consoles, won't be able to play it online either.

Farewell and adios. But it's been years since I last played an Xbox game online. Anyone affected by this news really ought to join us in the year 2010.

What he said.

Pity about a couple of games you'll never get to play ever again. Midtown Madness 3, the Ghost Recon games - all classics but tbh I can't really say I've touched 'em in the last 5 years or so.
